OK - who was the joker who told hubby to wear his bestest pants and be prepared to cough....!!!

Had our medicals today - nothing to them - so all you peeps who have yet to have yours ... don't fret at all (says me who didn't sleep last night for worrying - so worried I opened up the chest x-rays en-route to the docs  just to check I was breathing.....)...

Basically it went like this:

9am - Went to hospital - paid in cash for xrays £45 each - they didn't take cards so be prepared with cheque book or cash.

9.15 - Once paid went straight into xray - took a matter of minutes

9.30 - Both finished and told to return at 1pm to pick up xrays and med forms (the hosp will keep them until they return the xrays - remember to take 2 passport pics with you to stick on the forms AND your passports for I.D).

1pm - Picked up xrays

3pm - Medicals - took 30 mins for me (cos they can never get any blood out of me!! :x ) and 20 mins for hubby - paid £90 each (included blood tests) and left... happy! Doc said there were no probs, he even showed us the xrays and results and reassured us no probs - he explained exactly what each test was looking for and assured me that NO, they wouldn't stop me getting in cos I was a stone overweight (no really, I did worry about that  ) how silly huh!!

Now we're back home and happy it's over......

They sent us home with the xrays (hmmm on the wall framed and back lit?!!!) - they aren't needed anymore BUT (top tip...) he said that if we were to do our PADI exams in NZ to take them with us as sometimes they like to see chest xrays - needless to say he was a diver!)

The blood test results come back in 7-10 days and then the entire med forms and test results are returned to you .. sealed - DO NOT OPEN OR THEY MAY ASK YOU TO RE-DO MEDS!!) and you then forward said sealed package with the Invitation forms etc that, hopefully, will arrive in the next 6-8 weeks.

Can you tell that's a weight off my mind??

Good job, Moorf!!!

Always appreciate hearing those blow-by-blow accountings of What Happens!!

One thing that occurred to me about our decision to postpone application for my PR until after we are in NZ is that I could be rejected due to some unknown medical condition I wasn't aware I had. This made me very nervous, especially the BMI thing. I went ahead and had chest x-rays done along with bloodwork and a general physical, just to make sure I didn't have some expensive, migration-prohibiting illness before we sold up our house and moved. All is well. Working on the BMI thing. Picture a rhinosaurus on inline skates with a few unfortunate scuffs on the rump and you've about got it.

So glad you and Woz are the picture of health -- and another step down, eh?? Well done!!!

All the best, Rae

Rae - I asked him about BMI as he asked if I wanted to know what mine was (I had already calculated it so shocked him by giving him the right answer  ) - yes, I am a control freak

Mine was 27  he said 25 or below is the "norm" but they (NZIS)are only concerned if the BMI is above 36 (i.e. insulin intolerance or something) and further tests would be done.

And yes Rae - soooo glad another stage crossed off list. Now all we have to do is find those darned marriage certs!!

Great news Moorf.

It's good to knock down the hurdles. One less thing to think about now.

Well done with your medicals, did they pick up tour mind reading capabilities? 8)

I was going to post a question tonight looking for info on the medicals, as we are hoping to be in your position soon. Two things you didn't cover,

Did you use your local approved doctor/ hospital?
Do they check your medical records? :?

Hi Dave...

We used a Panel Doctor that we found on the NZIS website list. They arrange your xrays with the local hospital then back to the Panel Doc for medicals.

Well, sneaky old me had to find out about the med records  so I asked him where on the form I was to put my Doc's details and he said that they don't refer to your medical records unless absolutely necessary and he said that it was very rare.

Hope that helps!

Well done Moorf and thanks for all the details.

We haven't done ours yet and I am already worrying about it :!:

I know I am slightly over weight (not to much) and that concerned me too :!:

As far as Pete remembers (well it was about a year ago) he had to do the cough thing.

Moorf

Nope, he didn't have to cough! Had his best pants on too!!

Karl - doc specifically said NOT to open the sealed env containing the meds ( you can request a copy for yourselves at a later date) otherwise they may be "invalidated" if the seal is broken - I guess they want to stop people tampering...

I sent in my medical form unsealed too + that didn't cause any problems. But I guess if you're specifically told not to peek, then you shouldn't peek!

How overweight do you have to be for it to cause a problem with regard to NZ immigration? How many fried mars bar per week does it take to have a BMI of 36?

Congrats on getting it all done and dusted Moorf :)

Hard to put an exact weight on it as it all depends on your height etc...

Ymmm deep fried mars bars.... not something to be eaten on a regular basis  once a year perhaps !

I'm pleased cos I've lost nearly a stone in 2.5 mths YAY :P

Hello

I have just found this site and registered today as I need some advice.

We had our medicals yesterday and it has been discovered that my husband has an enlarged heart + mumur so he has to obtain a cardiologist report for the doctor. We have this in hand and have an appointment for next week but we are very concerned that this is going to put a stop to our application.

Has anybody else had a similar experience? :(

Hi Joanne

I have a heart murmer and had to submit a cardiologist report from investigations I had years ago and that was all they wanted.

Try not to worry too much, I'm sure there are lots of things that come up on medicals that require further investigation.

Let us know how you go on

Good luck

Michelle
