I would like to take this moment to thank Clare and Tony (The Hodges) for solving a big problem for me.
My parents do not and never will own a computer and my Mum likes to feel safe in the knowledge that they can always contact me in the UK by phone. As usual pensioners, they have to watch their pennies and I know they were a bit concerned about the cost of ringing NZ although thay would never let on. Any how we have made friends with The Hodges who are moving to Auckland about 4 weeks before we are. They came around our house yesterday and we had a great chat about our future moves. The most important thing they gave me was this website http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/intcallchecker/index.php

With this callchecker it now means my parents can ring me in NZ for as little as 0.5p per minute. This will mean so much to them and I am ever greatful for them for finding this for me.
This forum is so great it brings people together from all corners of the world and to me it is like one big happy family. Tony and Clare,it is a pleasure to have met you.
I know this probably sounds a bit daft but that one website has meant a lot to me
I'll stop waffling now

Kindest regards

Dave and Caroline

Thanks Dave http://www.freesmileys.org/emo/happy091.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org)

However, if anyone has used any of the numbers from the links, we'd be interested to know their views, as we haven't used any of them.

But we are happy to help and we don't mind at all.

Good luck guys and see you very soon. :nice1

(Will look at the money saving expert site later - thanks from me too).

We have just used 08442008585 at 0.5 p per min and the reception was excellent from the list. In fact it is clearer than some places in UK.

I assume folks know about the cheap international callling from NZ if you have to use telecom. dial 0161 before your number. They say this is a poorer quality line and best for short international calls, but I use it all the time to phone relatives in Canada and we talk for long periods and I have never had any problem with the line. I think its 7 cents a minute to canada. I called home talked for 21 minutes for $1.50 and thats cheaper than calling my DIL down the street on her mobile for one minute!:roll

just to clarify you still have to add the 1 for long distance so for instance to call Canada it would be 0161 1 250 444-3333.

Don't forget voipdiscount.com too !

Spent probably about an hour on the phone for 0.5 euro. You do need a headset and a pc to initiate the call though.

I have used this site http://www.telediscount.co.uk/index2.php. It costs about 2p/min. Excellent reception - smnall time delay but other than - good. I think it only operates from UK to NZ not the other way round.

For making it easy for people to phone from the UK, another simple option for those still on BT is to ask for the 'international add-on'.

This costs £1 per month on top of their normal bill but then calls to New Zealand are 3p per minute.

Might not be the cheapest possible option but is simple and easy to use and also excellent call quality.

Just wanted to point out that in UK if you are with TalkTalk and take an international plan you can have UNLIMITED anytime calls to 36 countries including New Zealand. I think its about £9.99 month plus £10.50 line rental. Thats pretty good I think :D
