Hi there,
Does anyone have some feedback on the Tauranga area of the BOP ?
It's our 1st choice destination... but I'm concerned about the size and the prospects of a job in IT - either in an IT company or any "other" company that has an IT dept.
Any feedback on where to live, places to go or avoid, IT companies.. etc very much welcome.
Regards,
Dorian

A word of warning - housing is very expensive in that area, check out trade me and some of the estate agents sites to get an idea of the prices you can expect to pay! - sorry can't help with the IT questions though!

Tauranga is one of the fastest growing towns in NZ and house supply is well below demand hence the high prices. My aunt built a house there 40 years ago in the countryside - it's now in the town and the countyside is several km away!
There are lots of suburbs with their own charms so I'm sure you'd find somewhere you'd like. For the best idea, you'd have to visit and check out the areas for yourself. Just don't buy one of the new soul-less, facility-less subdivisions on the edge of town
The town itself is pleasant and people like living there. The harbourside and Mount are quite lively, there is plenty to do and good access to the countyside. The pace of life is typically Kiwi. As far as IT jobs, there are some around but nowhere near as many as in Auckland or Welly. Most businesses are medium-sized and regional in their focus with a few national-sized firms. IIFC there are a few software companies based in the area and you see their adds on seek.co.nz occasionally.

I'll let you know when we get there! We are moving out to Tauranga on 19th March. We chose it because we liked the proximity to Auckland (about 3hrs), not as expensive as Auckland, yet with some of it's advantages. We wanted to live on the east coast and wanted a good climate. I will give you feedback on all of this when we eventually get there.
If anyone is reading this in Tauranga- get in touch!

We will be going there when my partner is done with his paramedic degree at the end of the year. We really like the area and the weather is better than Auckland.

we've lived in the mount for two years now. It's great but can't afford a house! Will have great difficulty leaving when we eventually buy somewhere, even if that's Tauranga.

Well we can let you know when my OH gets back from there at the end of April. He is spending 3 weeks with friends from SA who moved there 3 years ago. He is also in IT and will be chatting to some employment agencies and hopefully some prospective employers while he is there.
Our original plan was to move to Auckland because of the job security but our friends seem so happy in Tauranga and it sounds so great that Im hoping OH changes his mind while he is there...
Will be able to give more info once he is back!

Nice area, sure, but be aware, boyracers all over the place. Particularly Fri/Sat nights like now, you think participating a F1 race, it is so unbelievably loud EVERYWHERE here, you cannot imagine.
They are cahsing speeding hunting, doing burnouts, it really gives this area such bad reputation noise-wise. Their seem to be no laws or regulations since the police is literally not doing (willing or allowed) to do anything to get hold of this situation.
Sorry folks, but that`s the truth.
Cheers, Dabbi, Ohauiti, Tauranga (or the new F1 venue)

Hi There
we were going to live there but i worked there for 5 months first to get an idea of the area. The boy racer thing is a nuisance ,we had deisel poured all over our car park so they could burn up there tyres and things and i found it busy compared to cambridge. weather was definetly nice ,beach nice , houses very expensive. Papamoa seemed a popular place for brits to live but i did here of quite a few burglaries and bashings in the area. certainly put us off.

Yes burglaries and bashing everywhere - spread a bit more dis-information and the housing prices might go down - great idea!
Oil slicks and raw sewage on the beaches, Papamoa infested with white tailed spiders. Nutty drivers everywhere - take your life in your hands in the BOP. hehe
