I just got my medicals done today by Dr. Gillespie who was a lovely lady throughout. Put me at ease right away and fairly zipped through the whole process. the only painful bit was parting with the money :) it was £210 for the medical and £75 for the chest xray which was done at a seperate place. So if anyone is thinking of getting a medical in Glasgow, going by my experience today you should nothing to fear. Oh one scary bit is that i have been really keeping an eye on my weight as im borderline BMI, 33.5 but on her weighing machine i was 11 lb heavier! I couldnt believe it and told her they were out, i know they were but as she had entered the figure in the form she let me grow an inch! So i just made it :laugh

She did ours too... very nice she was too. (even though she was sick herself at the time!)
Hope everything goes through OK.

We had ours done in Perth by a doctor that we thought was quite good. He whizzed through the four of us and was good with the boys but there were a couple of problems after. OH had to go back for another blood test as his had 'gone missing' and the doc forgot to sign the forms (even though his secretary categorically denied this  ) but when unsigned medical was put in front of her she couldn't really argue. All in all, in the grand scheme of things irritations that we could have done without.
Hopefully you'll have none of our problems and your application will go through smoothly. Good luck.

yep, i hope things go ok. My xrays were fine, no abnormalities. I get bloods done 2 0r 3 times a year because i am diabetic so im hoping that as nothing untoward has shown up in those tests that i will have nothing lurking in these tests. The only thing that bothered me was the scales, they are definitely out as i have been keeping an eye on my weight and had my bmi at 33.5 max, that was me erring on the side of cautuion but on the exam scales it put me right on the borderline of 35 but the Doc thought that was ok and said it shouldnt be a problem, and i got my waist down to 39". Dont ask me how!! i will let you know how i got on. But she really was a lovely to deal with amidst all the chaos as they have only just moved into these premises in the City Centre from the surgery in Shawlands that they used to use. Anyway tis over barring something unlooked for in the bloods. Being diabetic i got a letter from my GP stating type of diabetes, medication and control, how all my levels are etc. So i took that to the medical with me and that helped her see my glucose control is good, kidneys are fine etc, all the things that get regularly checked for diabetics in this country. The care in the UK is excellent for diabetics and i hope NZ is half as good, that would do me.

One of my colleagues is very obsessive about her weight and know exactly what she weighs, She went for a medical and was told she was heavier by about 10 llbs and when she challenged it the doctor refused to take any notice. she then went to the chemist on the way home to check her weight and has since complained to the doctors but never got anywhere.
Obviously we need to keep an eye on the scales when we go for medicals and challenge when things are obviously wrong, and before the doc write anything down.
What is the upper limit for BMI, I am approx 31.

The limit is 35. However all it means if you're over 35 is that you have to have extra blood tests done (at your expense, of course). They just want to check that you are not diabetic etc. I had to have the extra tests done (you have to fast for these) and mine came back absolutely spot on. No problems whatsoever.

Okay, I just went to this site (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/) and checked myself. I'm riding close to the line at 31. I suppose that by the time I've sweated through the application process and finished packing and selling the house that number should improve quite a bit.

You know the fail figure for NZ is 35? There is also a 40" waist fail figure too which I found harder to get to than the BMI.

I've done quite a lot of research on this (sad I know) to find that most domestic scales, nomatter how expensive read 10 to 11lb light. I've even taken scales into chemists to jump off their calibrated ones onto domestics to check.
They are never 4,5,6 or 20lb out, always between 10 and 11 at my weight of around 13 1/2 stone..

Well, exactly one week after my medical i got a phone call from the DR to say that my blood results have been returned already and that they will post all the data out to me today. Seems there was no problems, chuffed to bits. Should get them tomorrow and then its on with collating all the stuff i need for the Partner Route and post them off to NZIS. Getting there folks, another big step out of the way. But i though that was really quick and may be of interest to those thinking of taking their Medical in Glasgow.
