This vehicle rental co. are giving the above price for campervans to be picked up in
CH CH and driven to Auckland not taking more than 5 days. Their problem being everyone wants to drive them the other way. They need those vans back so it seems a good idea to reverse your trip. Looks like a good offer, Here is the website. http://www.standbycars.com/vehicledetails.aspx?vid=982&ow=0

That is a nice thought Gran. But only having 5 days to go ChCh to Akl doesnt leave much time for seeing inbetween.
It is probably still cheaper and certainly more scenic than flying, all the same.

Hiya,
Just dug this thread out again because we're thinking of hiring a camper van for Easter and the week following. Anybody heard of any similar one-way deals for this period (ChCh to Auckland or vice versa)?
I'm considering just phoning all the hire companies and asking.... no harm in trying eh?

I have a feeling that its a seasonal flow with these campervans. It may be mentioned somewhere, if I find it will let you know.

Most bigger rental car companies do similar deals for cars going from Welly to Auckland. Either free (+ insurance excess) or something like $10 a day, and you have 3 days to get to Akl. I assume there will be similar arragements for Chch to Picton. Check out their websites.

Could I have a go at hijacking this thread...and extend it to car rental in general. I'm in NZ over the Easter holidays having a look around, and am looking for a decent (but cheap) car hire firm.
We were there 2 years ago and found a great small family firm in Auckland...$25 a day for their basic model. But has now gone out of business!!
The best I can find is $40 per day for 3 weeks' hire...don't need any whistles and bells?? Has anyone found anywhere cheaper for themselves??
Cheers

Try Bargain Car Rentals on Beach Road in AKL. $29 per day for a 2 year old Nissan Sunny 1.5 Auto with A/C,. There are others around at similar rates. 16 days total hire came to $450 incl insurance GST etc.
Don't know how busy car rentals may be over easter the rates leaflets we had didn't suggest that there was a premium to be paid oer their normal rates.
There are lots of car hire places by the airport and Downtown in AKL. May be worth waiting til youget here then just ringing around for the best rate.
