Hi all,
What sort of travel times are involved from Rotorua to Tuaranga ?
Is it commutable ?

Well, Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=tauranga,+new+zealand&daddr=rotorua,+new+zealand&sll=-38.055661,176.239929&sspn=0.775329,1.455688&ie=UTF8&z=10&ll=-37.918201,176.174011&spn=0.776783,1.005249&t=h&om=1) puts it at just over an hour by land.

Like anywhere else, it would depend upon which side of the cities you are travelling from and to where. Also, there is a toll road at Tauranga and although you don't have to use it, again it depends on whereabouts you are going.
Rizak isn't too far off the mark, but do allow for 'rush hour' traffic (seriously) although it's nothing like you will be used to in the UK !
So, to answer your question, yes - it is commutable, but (IMHO) from a working day perspective, it would be a pain to have to do it EVERYDAY - TWICE A DAY..........
Hope this helps,
Julie

Here's another question: how about car-pooling? Do many people do this, or do you prefer the freedom of having your own vehicle more?

The journey used to take me about 50 minutes outside of rush hour. Tauranga can get busy around rush hour (particularly around the port/Mt Manganui area). If you're from the UK, it's not that bad. If you're a local then it's terrible.
I wouldn't do that journey every day as the road is quite windy until you reach the coast with few overtaking lanes. You often get stuck behind lorries for 15 minutes at a time. (There is also a back route which, although more direct is very windy, steep and has several single lane bridges.)
