I feel a bit silly in that I should know this considering I have been over here for 3+ years, but only thought of it this morning and was hoping you lovely forumites may provide me with the answer :)
I am currently on Telecom network and am forever having problems texting UK mobiles (half the time my text is not received the other end even though my mobile says it has been sent ?!?)
Also when I bought my latest phone I was told by the dealer I would be unable to pxt to UK as NZ, did not, at that time have the technology to do it (something like that anyway?) I did try a few times regardless and true to form it did not go through !
Would I have more luck with Vodafone ? Or is it the same story whatever network you're on ?

Cheers

Jo :nice1

Vodafone network will (or should!) get you through. I think it is down to some of Telecom's equipment not being compatible with the GSM network.

And congrats on the junior membership LOL

We've been here almost all of 2 weeks now, and both got Vodafone sim cards, which worked absolutely perfectly in our UK mobile.

On their PAYG plan they have a "motormouth" tarriff which costs 49c per min to call the UK and 30c per text. I'm quite happy with that considering the distance too.

Messages get through straight away and calls are connected fine too.

Hi How much is it for the contract - we got Vodafone payasyougo, and have no prob txting, I have to sort out the settings for Pics but it should work.

I couldnt get through at new year - but it was the same in the UK at that time!

Jord bought the cheapest Telecom nokia for txting his mates on Telecom, but most of his mates were jealous of his Sony E camera/walkman phone!

I still laugh at some of the ringtones the guys at work have (bird sounds:con)

There are 2 cell phone standards used here in NZ.

I am not an expert but Vodafone seem to have the better technology (GSM)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_...Communications

their network is suppose to be in service around the world and used by over 2 billion people across more than 212 countries. This enables you in theory to use your portable cell phone anywhere in the world where GSM is available.

It appears Telecom backed the wrong horse and their CDMA technology network is not as good. IF you let the market decide then GSM has won out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_Di...ultiple_Access

Nokia a supplier of the cell phones said would pull out of CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) phone manufacturing, which it sees as a shrinking market in the longer term.

Having said that Telecom the incumbent / monopoly is not going to roll over and die. They offer better deals / promotions / tied into your cell phone used inconjunction with a regular landline phone. The commerce comission has forced Telecom to open up their network to level the playing field so in theory companies like Vodafone can offer similar or sweentened deals.

Id always say go with Vodaphone - but then what I think of Telecom right now is unprintable:D

One thing to always bear in mind - is that if you need more than 1 mobile in the family - you should tend to get the same ones - either both Telecom (*spit*) or Vodaphone. This is because it costs considerable more to call between the two services.

(And following Britchics example - this takes me to 1500 posts. I need to get out more:D )

My contract is $35 plus gst, and that gives me 200 minutes to another vodafone and 200 txts to another vodafone. Following on from Av's advise, hubby is a vodafone pay as you go, so that works well for us cause I never go over my 200 minutes and I phone him at least once every day. It costs 17 cents to txt other mobile and the UK, which obviously tops up my bill at the end of the month. I have looked at other options on Vodafone and Telecom and will be no better off, they all work out about the same for me.
