This has to be the weirdest question of the day.
Where do I go to donate blood? I'm a regular at the Canadian Blood Services and have just made my 59th donation. It's a good practice that I want to keep up after we move.

Hi ,
I really wanted to give blood here , but they won't have it - most brits will be in the same boat - Think its if you lived for more than 6 months in UK pre 1996 - they dont want you to donate for fear of CJD (mad cow)
dissapointed , as I like to do my bit .

I may have to review my donations. They've added a new question to the list of things they need to know (besides the sexual history and whether I've lived in Europe or Africa for more than 6 months).
Have you ever come into contact with monkeys or monkey fluids?
I mean ... this is Canada! Our native monkey population is HUGE!

Monkey fluids? That's either code for
"Have you ever had sex with a monkey?" or
"Have you ever had a monkey smoothy?"
I'm not sure which is more disturbing!

Following Darwin's theories, that is not a stretch or is it :D

The scientific consensus is that HIV originally was simian, and leapt to H. sapiens by fluid, so that's reason for the question. (One need not speculate on the details.)
By contrast to North American standards, the questions in NZ are a bit less graphic, and the nurse is spared reading them to you aloud. The basics are the same, except the restriction on time spent in the UK and France is 6 months rather than 3 months. (Thus allowing me to give again - yay!)
Also, you're expected to wait 12 weeks between donations, rather than 8 weeks.

You mean ... I'm expected to give blood so all those coming from the UK can stay alive? Hardly seems fair. What have they done for me lately?
;)
Here in Canada, the minimum interval between blood donations is 56 days (8 weeks) as well.

Just had a phone call from blood donation people in UK almost begging me to go and give platelets. Have got up to 94 donations and was hoping to get above 100 before we go but my veins are in a bit of a mess from all the donations. in UK we can give platelets every couple of weeks.
Anyone still in UK who donates and is able to give platelets please contact your nearest collection centre and give.
Do what you can before you go and then we will let the canadians keep us in blood when we get to NZ - Thanks Rizak
