I thought when in Rome and all that and decided to buy a toploader instead of a frontloading washing machine. It's a 6kg holding whirlpool and it was just under $1000 so not cheap. Anyway, it seems fine on tough cottons like sheets etc, but it's making mincemeat of my towels (admittedly cheap beach towels from the Warehouse but still!). It seems to remove loads of fluff from them, which then clings all over them and any other clothes that were in with them, and all round the drum too. It does the same with any fluffy-type clothes. There'll be nothing left of them after another couple of washes. There are also holes appearing in one of my daughter's little cardies.

Is this common? Is there any way of protecting my stuff?

We had a rented one until our frontloader got here. it put holes in my stuff too in those few short weeks...

Dont know what to suggest really..

Same here, was very glad when my frontloader arrived, after losing some clothing to a toploader!

But everyone here has one and their clothes don't have holes in them. Do they know something that I don't?

Take a look at your manual and see if it has a 'gentle' agitator. On some models, the main spindle is actually two parts. The main stack can be detached, leaving a much smaller agitator which is used for delicates.

This is the standard style of model in NA.

Now, the Dragonlady would never do her delicates in the washer. She does them in the sink, but your situation seems to call for that kind of action.

We don't have that smaller agitator on ours and it works just fine. Maybe you have the wrong water level for the amount of clothes you're trying to do? I don't know. I'm just spitballing here.

Ask your neighbour.

I have a fisher & Paykal one and although the towels had excess fluff on them for a few weeks they are fine now. I do tend to find that clothes that pick fluff up can do if you put something that malts with it.
Check your manual, and are you using the basic programe for your little girls cardy? try the delicate wash programe.
I like mine cause I can get more in it, plus the horse rugs!!:laugh

hope you can sort yours out

I also have a Fisher & Paykel top loader and I've never had any probs with it eating the clothes - don't know what to suggest. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Personally I much prefer a top loader to a front loader - mainly because I always find I drop a sock on the way to the laundry - there's no probs with just lifting the lid and adding it once the cycle has started !!

Ohhhhhhhhh Diny thats a different story to what you put on before about your washing - wasn't it your knickers you used to drop on the way to the washer?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:laugh

I have a lost a few of Emerson's small socks - can see some 'bits' stuck under the agitator jobby so think they have been eaten by the machine. I know what you mean about the fluff on towels though - instead of throwing them in whenever, now i do a separate wash just for the towels. But other than those couple of problems I quite like the top loaders!

have had three different top loaders for the hostel and never felt that they washed as clean as the front loaders although the cycle is much quicker. never had a problem with holes appearing in stuff or it eating anything, just that it ofter came out with a lot of lint/soap powder residue in it and because the backpackers could see 'into' the machine they were very inclined to overload it. have now got an 8kg front loader and its much better, it also uses less water, and have moved the 8kg top loader over to the flats we have.

Well, had a good pull, but the main agitator doesn't seem to come out, even though it's an American brand. I think you're right though, I will need to do towels separately so that everything isn't covered in fluff. Kind of wish I'd got a front loader now, although yes I do like the way you can keep opening it. Way too lazy to do delicates by hand though. Will stop buying delicate clothes!

The Dragonlady swears by sink laundry. She says her bras last at least twice as long and don't get 'pills' or holes. I have to agree, though it means that I have to put up with her delicates hanging up around the house all the time. I suppose we'd need to find a better place for that once we move and start having company over all the time.

Marcia, check your closets for extra hangers. Socks are just the pupal stage of wire hangers. When you find that one has gone missing, it has simply changed into its adult form.

It really embarrasses Steve, as every time they are there, it seems one of the guys stops by for a beer , located in the fridge next to the laundry room:D
