Hi everyone! Hubby is a week away from his reccy & we need a few questions answered regarding the WP process.
a) If he gets a firm job offer, can he apply for a WP then & there even though he'll be coming back to UK ?
b) What documentation does he need to take for applying for a WP?

You can search other forum posts with the word 'work permit'.

He needs to apply for a work permit and visa to enable him to come and go out of the country. done at the same time. Xray if he is from a country that has TB still. UK OK xray no xray needed.

Passport, reference email addresses for job offer company to apply to. any qualification certificate if required. A suit if its that kind of role, although people generally do not wear them for work they do for interviews, strange.

what sort of work does he do?? And where will he be looking??

Most jobs will want him to start almost straight away.

PM me if you need anymore help.

Angela

Hi

we are here on a work permit and are in process of gaining PR.
The ONLY diiference in a WP and PR process is that you dont need police certs. Our work permit took 5 months from begining to end. It is not an easy process and you need to start the process ASAP

Thanks for the advice. I will burn the midnight oil reading up on WPs. Hubby is a plumber & will be looking in the Welly area.I am concerned that your WP took 5 mths. though, I had the impression these were fairly quick if you have a firm job offer. And there I was thinking the knots in my stomach were gone.

I applied in the UK for a WP for 12months to go with an ongoing PR application thinking I didn't need a medical and police clearance.
The whole application came back return post wanting the Certs and medicals.
I already had them, but I was holding them back so that my ITA could be returned complete, ie with all certs and medicals for the whole family.
Sent the application back and it was returned by return of post again!! This time with a two year sticker in my passport.

I get the impression that a work permit for use with an ITA must be complete with docs for a two year application together with police cert and medical (plus everything else). It seems they only issue short WPs if they aren't connected to an ongoing application, ie go out, get an offer, get a WP then apply for PR.

Not seen this in writing though.

Our WP took 5 months from the day we down loaded the forms, ( 4 months 21 days to be precise) we had hold up after hold up...6 weeks for our medicals to go to Wellington because my husband had one result on his blood work was 1 point over the limits.....which is not unusaly according to our Dr.

Pepole underestimate how long it takes to get all the paper work sorted.

Dont go for a WP less than 2 years or you are not coverd for any state medicals or benifts AND you are liable for duty on any goods you import.

Our app was for a stright WP, we only appiled for PR once we got here as we needed 6 police reports from the all the countries we have lived in the last few years.....I waited 4 months for the USA one!

Hope to get it closer to the 2 weeks than 5 months. Havig said that I am still waiting for the NZQA.

We are then going to apply to teaching council before the desperate search for jobs and applying for wp.

already need police check for teaching council but sounds like we will need medicals for our wp as it will be part of our pr process in future

Hi there Victoria.

Yes ! Is the short answer. He can apply for a work permit then and there -- Provided he has brought ALL his documentation with him the work permit However, is he returning to the UK first ?

It is work permit if in New Zealand
and called a
Work Visa if still in the UK

NZIS will need to know that he is qualified and trained as a plumber. They will need to see verified copies of his qualifications and details of his work experience if he applies for the work permit via SMC - Skilled Migrant Category.

He can get copies of his qual certificates stamped for free by an NZ justice of the peace. It's no worries . Just look one up and phone them.

He will also need to have his UK plumbing quals 'sanctioned' / assessed by the PGDB - plumbing gasfitting and drainlayers board of nz. These offices are in Wellington.

Link here
http://www.pgdb.co.nz/

NZIS accept this assessment.
Only the PGDB can assess this particular trades qualifications. Not NZQA.

When he is due to start work , he will need to apply for a Limited Licence. That is through the PGDB also. He cannot apply for this without having an NZ employer. A registered NZ plumber will be signing off all his work until he has passed his written and practical exams. Until then a limited licence will do very well.

We did this route Victoria. It took a fair few months for the work visa to be in place, as we went back to the UK before returning to NZ. Good employers will wait.

Over the counter type work permits happen if you are in and remaining in NZ. Even then NZIS will want to check his suitability to apply for a work visa/permit under SMC

Get your husbands employer to put in a firm start date. If you want to be here quickly , then have that date sooner rather than later. NZIS will prioritize according to need.

If going for a two year visa don't forget your police checks. I think these are required now. Are meds?

Once here and having a wonderful time , bung in an EOI Expression of Interest, get selected and settle.

Hi

Our experience is as follows......

OH was offered a job while we were in NZ in a reccie. We picked up all the forms from the Hamilton immigration and were advised as we were going back to the UK to apply for a work visa there. So I went to London with the two application, OH job offer in Skills shortage area, they checked the paper work there and then. I was told it would take up to two weeks to process. The next day got an e-mail to say it was all processed and passports would be returned, got them two days later.

We applied for a 9 month visa and have applied for residence at the same time. I know we may have to pay a bond to bring our furniture, but this is returned when hopefully get residency. Medical is also a concern but OH gets medical cover with his job and we can add me if we pay.

Good luck with it all.

Jo
