Anyone with any information that could relate to this I would really appreciate hearing it, I am completely confused and figured this is the place to ask....

My OH applied as a skilled migrant and his application was declined. Now over the last week I've been finding out about character waivers and such which I think/hope will be an option. Someone suggested to me though that it would be best to speak to NZIS face to face. Here's the thing, if he has been declined to live here under section 7, will they even let him come to visit? Has anyone else been in this situation? I phoned NZIS and asked that and they said he may have to get a special direction, but they didn't say how he would go about that if he needed one. The other thing is he's in America, which is a visa free country right, so he shouldn't even need a visa to come, but since he's already in the system... who wants to get off the plane and get told to turn around and go home again.

Thank you so much

He's not been kicked out of the country though has he? Surely he can "visit" on a visitor's visa for 6 months - as long as he departs at the end of the 6 months. I would think it is only people who have been forced to leave NZ for legal/criminal reasons that may face problems getting in ??

No, he's never been to NZ. But it's just that it doesn't seem so straight forward since 'they don't want him to live here' and maybe they don't want him here at all.
I was just hoping someone may have had experience with this before.
But thank you for your input :)

I guess it depends on what he did that makes them "not want him".... are we talking driving offences or jail time?

the jail offences question is relevant - you need to consider the questions you have to answer when you fill out the arrivals card prior to landing in NZ - one of them is whether you've ever spent more than 12 months in jail.

Got to agree with Moorf on this one Mea. They aren't just going to say "No" just for the hell of it. There must be a valid reason for this decision. Or maybe the position of Skilled migrant is just not there for him/them. What does other half do?

He's in construction.

And he only had a couple of misdemeanor assault charges, no jail time.
