Has anyone on this forum looked into doing a total self-move from USA to NZ? And what are your thoughts on the subject?
What....
We're considering purchasing a used container, packing and loading it ourselves (with locally hired, cheap labor), arranging transport to a shipyard, arranging ocean freight through a second party, doing the immigration work in NZ, hiring a hauler to move it where we want it, and unloading it, and finally reselling the container. (Yes, Dear, that's a run-on sentence! :) )
Why....
We're not sure where or when we will be packing and inpacking. (Well, we know where we're packing, just not the un- part. :P ) I'm fairly certain it's cheaper to store the whole, loaded container than to pay someone to unlaod, store, and reload. And if we want part of it we can probably get to it.
Logic....
(Heck, this was my idea; there is no logic!) A friend of ours uses a contain to ship his dance floor, tent, and sound sysytem from Cariibean to Hawaii and back on a semi-regular basis, then he can store it cheaply when he's not using it.. Someone on this ...or maybe one of the others.... site wrote of handling things on the NZ end and appeared to have a much easier and faster time of it than those using a third party to deal with shipping and NZIS and MAF. And third, I tend to be a do-it-yourself sort of person anyway. (I meet lots of really cool people tht way! ... and learn new things... which I quickly forget because I'm getting old and my mind is getting kind of frail... not that I was ever the sharpest knife in the drawer anyway!)
