Hello,
Have got good news this week. Have just been offered a job at North Shore Hospital!:D
So I would like to hear if anyone is living in North Shore, has any recommendations on areas to live in or to avoid!
Is it easy getting around - any public transport as I'm not sure whether I'll be able to get a car straight away. So getting to work by foot, bike or bus would be great but I'm not sure whether that means you could live.
I'd like to live in a place with green spaces, cafes and bars and shops nearby, no need to look for schools or anything - just fun things for people who have no kids and are in their mid-twenties (just!).
Can anyone help?

I can't help you, but just want to send a congratulations your way! May I ask how you did the hiring process? Was it over the phone? In person? I'm very curious about how people do it. Congrats!

Wow, congratulations Susie! :cheers There plenty of people here on the North Shore who I'm sure will have advice/info for you. We are not, so I can't really help! A good bet is the book Where to Live in Auckland....http://www.wheretoliveinauckland.co.nz/
and also a search on here for same.
Good luck!

Hey Susie - congrats on the job offer! My flatmate is a doctor and has just finished a 3 month stint at North Shore Hospital, and is now back at Auckland City Hospital.
Will you be working shifts - or is your work more 9-5? She found it hard to get public transport because of shift work, and had to rely on a car. But normal daytime hours there are plenty of buses that go to the hospital (it's in Takapuna).
If you wanted to walk or cycle you would have to live on the shore - as you can't do either over the harbour bridge, and it would be a bit of a trek from either of the ferry terminals in Birkenhead or Devonport.
I'm not a big fan of many of the suburbs - they all seem a bit family centric to me, and I'm not quite ready for that yet...

Thanks for all the replies - couldn't quite believe it when I got offered the job and it hasn't really sunk in yet either.
UpNorthMum - I saw an advert for a job on the web, phoned up the contact person (happened to be gone midnight UK time - but I seized the moment!). I then sent them my CV and four days later had a phone interview. The post was vacant and I think I had the right amount of experience they were looking for! But it was a bit of a phone marathon, an hour and a half - I don't think they are normally that long.
Gil - Thanks for the tip about the book - I think I am being sent a copy of that with some stuff from the hospital
KerryS - At the moment I think my hours will be 8-4.30 monday to friday - so luckily no shifts! I'd like to avoid using a car and my boyf is thinking about getting a motorbike in NZ to use for work - but I think we'll need a car in the end. Any tips on places to avoid - either not enough going on or shockingly expensive rental prices?
Hopefully I'll be in NZ by end of April (am getting a leaving party sorted - so have my priorities in order!)
Thanks for all the help.

Hi Susie,
Caz and I live in MIlford which is the area that North Shore hospital is in- we live about at 20 min walk from the hospital. The Milford shops have everything you need - two supermarkets, two greengroceers, 3 chemists, wine shop, baker, butchers, etc., etc. You''d be glad to know there are a few cafes, and a British style pub with Newcastle Brown, and Speckled Hen plus others on tap. We also have direct bus routes into the CBD and a wonderful beach.
You can get a 2 bedroom apartment or unit around here from £350pw upwards. If you have any specific questions drop me a PM.
Rgds.,
Nick.
