a) anyone seen tinned processed marrowfat peas rather than just garden peas available in NZ?

b) Unsmoked european style bacon seems hard to find - any ideas?

e.g. are these things available in Pak-and-Save, New World.. etc..

Thanks

a) anyone seen tinned processed marrowfat peas rather than just garden peas available in NZ? no but then not something i'd be looking for

b) Unsmoked european style bacon seems hard to find - any ideas? closest we've found is one of the varieties of "beehive bacon". you can get it in most supermarkets. its not quite the same but pretty close.

Definitely no tins of processed peas.....my hubby is devastated !! (Fortunately for him I put loads of them in our container.) Also, all the tinned garden peas seem to be 'with mint', but to be honest, I can't taste the mint.

You can however buy Batchelors Mushy peas, but they are over $2 a tin. Fortunately you can buy dried blue peas (from places like the Bin Inn) and make your own mushy peas.

Have to agree with Trigirl about Beehive bacon.....it really is quite yummy. We tend to get the streaky and it goes really crispy. Funny that, 'cos I always used to buy rindless back bacon back in the UK and would never dream of buying streaky.

I work as an online shopper in Woolworths and I will try to remember to have a look tomorrow for you. I know that there are definitely lots of different types of bacon but am not sure about the type you are looking for off the top of my head!

You could always look in a British Shop for the peas?

Please stop talking about bacon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon)!

If I have a weakness, this is it. Okay, I suppose it's a good idea to talk about it because I need to know what I can get.

I wanted to join the Bacon of the Month Club (no foolin'), but they only ship to addresses in the continental United Americainian States.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I'm used to the 'streaky' bacon that is the standard in NA.

What is this aversion to processed peas? I love 'em - love most veg tbh.

Just a thought; if and only if NZ had some oil now, US could "liberate" them from the "tyranny of Ms Clark" and then NZ would become part of the Excited States of America. This in turn will allow the club to ship your bacon to you down there!!
I know its a stretch but heck America has to do something to "keep out of trouble" after they are finished bombing Iran. And NZ could always use some of our Bacon eh!

Unfortunately, no.

Continental. That means NOT Hawaii and NOT Alaska. Only the 'connected' states.

:wah

I'm not moving to the UAS just for the excellent bacon.
Tempting though it might be, there are other factors to consider.

Another vote for Beehive streaky as the nicest supermarket bacon, though I suspect there is a lot of sugar in the 'cure'... Most supermarket bacon is pretty rubbish - wet, full of water, empty of flavour and intensively produced.

Best bacon we have had in NZ is from Havoc Pork via the Dunedin Farmer's Market (also available online) - the quality of all their pork products is excellent (baby ribs yum yum), they keep happy / outdoors pigs so no animal welfare concerns. It crisps up well, very little water / weird white stuff comes out when you cook it (dry cured rather than injected with flavoured water). Well worth the extra money.

As in the UK smaller producers are the place to go for quality food - when you can find them. Supermarkets here tend to base their ranges on the lowest common denominator (cost) and the fact that NZ hasn't had a foodie culture means that most people haven't demanded much more than cheap, mediocre food. We are doing our best to help change this by supporting small / local producers!

i'd think that is often the case. but places like moore wilsons (vast bulk shopping - think costco) also do a fabulous range of fresh food, often pulling together under one roof the best of the local producers. eg the moore wilsons here in welly has bread and other baked stuff from arobake, sausages from island bay butchers, etc. plus a huge range of organic fruit and veg.

i've also been pretty impressed with the range and quality of veg in pak'n'save in kilbirnie - though less so in other supermarkets.

You might be able to get fat marrows in Cool Britannia - but get ready to take ou a second mortgage.
I dont miss them really.

And Pak-n-save have just brought out a range of Euro style bacon.
Again - tried it - but I've got so used to Beehive I cant bring myself to pay the HUGE amount for the other stuff.

Freedom Farms bacon is nice, although slightly more expensive than the Beehive stuff, but it does come from free range happy pigs...

My Hubby too is non too happy about it although I haven't yet tried the Great Britian Shop - found it a little expensive when I've looked in for stuff before.

Thanks Julie, although OH is very particular about his peas :laugh. Will have to pass on that one and just keep buying the tins of mushy peas. Apart from them and sweetcorn he doesn't eat any other veg :roll

I did bring 2 packets of Whitworths dried peas with me and so far have resisted the temptation to cook them although I noticed earleir they have to be used by June - typical! Can't stand them myself!! :no

If I want baked beans I buy the Oak brand - same as Moorf. The packaging is very unappealing (read ugly and dated), but they are the closest in taste to Heinz. Better than the English recipe ones, and cheaper too.

I must admit I miss my Hammonds brown chop sauce, though it was even difficult to get back in the UK.

Just wondering if anyone has discovered anything similar?
