I can't recommend The Sea Kayak Company (http://www.seakayaknz.co.nz) enough, they were absolutely brilliant. If you want to go kayaking, go with Peter and Maureen, they'll treat you so well, and they actually seem to care about every customer. Some of the other companies apparently are a bit cold, and not as good! ;)

Thanks Questor!! I really fancy doing that, it's on my list ;)
Hope you enjoying yourself down there.

p.s. I notice on your blog that you say Ikea are coming. Spoke to someone in Ikea in UK last week, they reckon it may not be on the cards due to NZ's small population, but I (and others no doubt!) hope that they do come to NZ :nice1

We finally got to do some sea kayaking too and I can't wait to do more! Really enjoyed our pootle around from Tata Beach to Taupo Point - we went with Golden Bay Kayaks and there were great too. (Half day in either closed / open sea kayaks $60 per adult. They have taken kids along as young as 2 yrs old!)
We saw seals and stingrays and birds of all types, the water was calm and clear and there was no-one but the other 2 boats around. We stopped off at Doctors Beach on a private island for a snack - bliss.
Not sure Woz was too keen on my steering though! :D

Cheers for the recommendations Questor and Moorf. I'm off to Abel Tasman for Easter and I want to do some kayaking. (Just as long as it isn't too cold by then - I'm a bit of a wuss!)

Thanks for your post. I think you've convinced me to spend more than a day at Abel Tasman. I'll be heading down there next week. It is important to me to try to find somebody who'll let me take a single kayak, though. I much prefer a single to a double.

Well, I just booked a one day guided kayak trip with The Sea Kayak Company. I called around to all the other outfitters, and most wouldn't let me have a single kayak on a guided trip at all. Abel Tasman Kayaks said maybe if they happened to have a spare one around, and The Sea Kayak Company said I could have one for sure as long as the guide decided I had the experience to handle it. That shouldn't be an issue as I have a fair amount of ocean kayaking experience and a fairly solid (though somewhat rusty) eskimo roll.
Thanks for recommending them, they were really helpful on the phone. They even helped me with some of my other travel plans.
