What exactly do they do at the medicals? Can someone give me a list? We are extremely healthy, active people, but I still have my worries, of course. Do we get to see the results? I know that sealed results must go to NZ, but I would like to know all the results as well. Also, to those of you in the USA, does insurance cover these or do we have to pay out of pocket? How about the time frame, meaning from date of medical exam to date we get sealed results to send? Do we send the results or does our medical facility do that?

Thanks so much!

Hi Nicole,

When we had the medicals (in the uk) they tested height and weight, reflexes, eyesight, blood pressure, and they took blood, although I am not too sure what they tested that for, and of course the chest x rays.

it wasn't too bad in honesty, although I was dreading it, our results were not sealed and we had a good look through before sending them of to NZIS.

I am sorry I can't answer your question though about the insurance covering it, but I am sure that there will be someone on the forum who will.

I got the result back in 1 week. Things done were as per Hels post plus asking some questions on the answers i had filled in on the application. There was 1 question that asked smokers even if you had given them up, to calculate how many cigs you had smoked in your life, mine was 24,000  Dr also looked in my mouth and ears, felt over most of body and head, i assume for lumps or something. My results were sealed and had the drs signature and stamp over the seal and then cellotaped :D

I know that some of the tests are for red & white cell count, sugar in blood, hepatitis etc., some of the more knowledgeable posters will elaborate im sure.

Hi nicole,

Another thing I remembered is that they tested Your urine, I think for proteins and sugar. ( Children under the age of 5 were exempt from this) but my 6 year old thought having a wee in a cup very funny!

I submitted the blue NZIS medical forms (with passport sized photos attached in all the right places). Results were handwritten in by the doctors we worked with in a myriad of designated spaces - so we did have access to this info (BTW your medical records are belong to YOU, your medical facility stores them, so to speak, so, yes, you always have access to a copy of all results whether they are also sent to NZIS sealed or not).

All forms were signed in all the right places by the docs, radiologists, phlebotomists, radiology techs, etc.

Additional detail on results for one family member were needed - the doctor simply wrote/signed a letter with requested detailed results within text.

When all the ITA requested docs were ready to send out they were compiled and sent out by us (not the medical facility) in one fell swoop.

The fingerprint assessment/clearance by the FBI was really what took the longest (8-12 weeks).

BTW, we live in the same state as you - good luck in your journey!

Hope this helps!

medicals do not have to be sealed for NZ immigration. they do have to be sealed for australian immigration and drs often get confused. you'll hear lots of people on here say they sent them unsealed (including us) and not one case of there being a problem with that.

My medical results were not sealed. I looked at everything and asked my doctor follow questions regarding blook work and x-rays. The physical exam was very easy--basics of sight, hearing, reflexes, bp, heart rate, breathing sounds, etc. All done with clothes on. The only thing I had to take off clothes for was chest xray, and got to wear a cute little hospital gown then:laugh

It was actually less of a big deal than I imagined (I'm in the US). My tests were ready in 10 days. I told my GP to file everything with my insurance to see what they'd pay; insurance has paid for lots of it so far, but all of the bills haven't come in yet as we just had this done last month.

I've got appts for the medicals in March, Dr said they won't be covered by insurance, but I'll ask him to submit anyway and see if they'll pick some of it up. As to what they will be doing, I'd say look up the form on the NZIS site and look it over. I made copies of the form and gave them to the Dr to look over, and got passport sized pics taken of both of us to attach to the form.

My insurance covers "well physicals" once a year, so that is how mine were covered (in part). Some of those tests were not covered, like syphilis and HIV. However, my dr. was also all for helping us out. He did not write "immigration medicals" on anything (the insurance co. would have fainted dead away). I hadn't had a thorough physical in three years, and my girls hadn't in over 2, so we were due.

Same here- insurance covered my & my husband's medicals (two different companies) and I know in my case the doctor wrote it up as a physical, with the blood work to "follow up" on some concerns.

Argh, I just had a physical a few weeks ago and John had one last week. We'll have to push it off, I think. I don't want to pay for it out of pocket.

ETA: thank you all for this information. I really appreciate it! It's good to know what's coming.

A couple more questions-

*At what age do children have to have medicals?

*After my first child was born, I was treated with medication for Post-Partum Depression for about six months. Will this count against me?

Thanks again! This has been extremely informative. :)

I believe that all children have medicals, but the younger they are the more basic they are. for example my 3 year old was measured and weighed and had his reflexes checked and that was it, whilst my 5 year old was additionally checked for urine, eye sight, his breathing listened to and I think his blood pressure was taken. - It wasn't intrusive and the Dr was very good with them. :yes

I'm sorry though I am not sure about the answer to the depression.

Hope this helps
