When I first looked at this forum I was petrified by all the abbreviations and some of them took a while to work out:

For any new members here is a list of some of them and what they mean:

EOI - Expression of interest. This is you paying money to NZ gov and filling in a form to say you are interested in applying for residency in NZ. You then get put into a pool based on the points calculated on your EOI

ITA - Invitation to apply. Those selected from the pool are invited to apply for residency. This is you paying money to NZ gov and filling in a form.

PR - Permanent Residency. The NZ gov have accepted you as a resident. after 5 years your can apply for citizenship.

WP / WV - Work Permit / Work Visa. You should have a work visa to enter the country with the intention of working. At immigration this becomes a work permit.

W2R - work to residency. A work permit of 2 years that allows you to work towards getting your residency.

OH - Other half. Wife, husband, Partner.

IMHO - in my honest opinion

RFTM - Please refer to the manual in a quiet manner.

IMHO these are the ones that scared me the most. Feel free to correct me on my meanings and add any that I have missed

Thanks for the abbreviations.
I always understood that you can apply for citizenship after two years. Is it really five years? And does that mean that the PR visa lasts for five years? I don't mean to question your knowledge on such matters as I know very little and I am probably wrong, I just would like to clarify.

Anyone who gains PR after 30th April 2005 has to wait for 5 years before going for citizenships. Before that date it's 3 years.

PR is indefinite and you don't have to go for citizenship if you don't want to.

After 2 years of holding a PR visa and being in the country a minmum of 6 months each year you can go for your IRRV which is your indefinite returning residents visa which means you can leave and come back at a later date. Although in certain circumstances this can be revoked.

HTH :)

I thought IMHO was 'in my humble opinion' rather than honest? I suppose either is good.

RTFM - Please refer to the manual in a quiet manner.

I believe this one is READ THE FULL MANUAL.

I made an animated avatar that I use on another site that reminds people what some less common abbreviations are. Some might find it questionable, so I include a link instead of embedding it here.

OK, after reading this.... and, in particular, seeing the avatars and not knowing how to build one I have a new abbreviation.
IASI = I am so inadequate!

Don't feel bad. I am fully equipped to do daily battle with the intarblag. I'm sure you have many skills/resources that I don't.
