I started this (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10371)thread and received good advice regarding the posting of sensitive financial information. Thus, we now have an anonymous poll so that people can share if they feel like it.

The question is this, how much money did you emmigrate with in your savings account? The reason why we are interested in this is because my wife and I are trying to set some financial goals and we want to see what most other people are doing in this regard. In the end, I think this will be very valuable information for us all.

Please vote in this poll, so we can collect some data. There is no need to post any information about yourself if you do not wish to.

All dollar amounts in this poll are NZD. I figure that since we are all bringing different currencies from all over the world, it'd be much easier if we just convert to this before we start.

Thanks!

The results are very interesting so far. Since I was planning on emmigrating with a job offer, I thought $100,000 was a high number. I suppose, if you are coming over and then looking for a job, then it would be really low.

Keep voting people! Lets see how the numbers crank out!

Assuming you wanted to come here and be mortgage free and no debts etc then I would put the figure you need to bring over at around NZ$400- 500k.

That could buy you an average family house near a city/town with jobs.... and cover relocation expenses, job finding and initial rentals and all the gear you need to buy etc etc..... imho.

wouldn't the world be grand if we could all be mortgage free... ;)

As a general rule of thumb I agree, however those figures really do depend upon where you are looking to settle.

For example Helen, should you be able to pick up your lovely home and move it here to Whakatane, I'd be prepared to bet that you would have to pay a lot more for it here. Housing prices here are sky-rocketing to the ridiculous.

Another way of looking at it is that if people put their savings into the bank and rent a property as opposed to buying one , the banks pay a healthy (before tax) interest rate of 7% + and this could give a nice contribution towards the monthly income.

But, like you say - that's just my opinion........

No doubt, but are you saying that if you wanted to buy an average house outright up near you guys you'd need more than $500K? I'm not talking house with view, lots of land...

Re mortgage free - I guess I'm just one of those whose aim was to have no, or very little, mortgage here and assumed most people had similar aims.

And yes, house prices ARE rocketing so perhaps the idea of mortgage free is a bit dated... we've only been in this place a year and while we bought it at just short of $400k it's now valued at just under $600k. Madness if you're not already on the property ladder....

The short answer to that question is yes.

To give you an example......there is a piece of land for sale (think it's on Trade Me too) at the moment in Ohope.....it's about 670 (ish) m2 and they are asking over $500,000 for it !!! Unbelievable isn't it.

Obviously, a lot depends on the area, but there is a programme on tv at the moment, I think its channel3 on Tuesday evening - something to do with Mitre 10. There are 2 teams revamping homes in Whakatane with a view to one of the teams winning the property. Now they are pretty average homes, but not quite as large as I personally prefer and last week they had a GV put on them of $330-$350 (if my memory serves) so yes, there are properties available at less than $500,000, but that depends on a persons definition of average and the area I suppose.

Not a dated view at all.

We sold our UK house for a lot more last year than we would have if we had sold it 12 months prior.........all relative I suppose.

Absolutely! My brother would be over the moon with a detached house, let alone a big garden... hard to remember just how packed in the houses are back home sometimes... yet I have friends who wouldn't move here unless they could afford the "views" and have lots of land.... horses for courses! :nice1

But here I am talking "houses" again, very British ;), I wonder if some come here with housing being a lot further down their list?

I think you could maybe do with another category after the $100,000 or more section. As the majority at the moment seem to fall into that category, I'm sure some will have brought $100k and some closer to $1m. Might just give you a better idea of how much folk are bringing.
