Hi there,
just wondering if I will need to take a driving test in New Zealand or if I can automatically get a NZ liscence as I have a British one.
I understand that driving in NZ is a whole new experience.......

You are entitled to drive on your UK licence for 12 months, after that you have to sit a theory exam. Its only a scratch card exam so nothing to worry about. 35 questions and you are allowed 3 wrong for a pass but only two if you hold a HGV licence.
As for an experience, by god it is!!!!

... and for us North Americans? I'm assuming that I'll have to apply for an International license and then take a test a lot sooner.

Nope - see http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/factsheets/56.html for information. After a year you'll need to take a theory test.

You don't have to sit the practical test if:
you have a licence from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or the United States of America, and
your licence is current (or has expired within the past 12 months), and
you've held that licence for more than two years.WOO HOO!
Thank you Croft.
