Hello All.
Yes, Steve and I have passed our NZ driving tests....YAY !
And for those of you still to do it - don't worry............
Due to us coming from the UK and already having full UK licences, I just had to do the car drivers theory test, but because Steve is a Diesel Mechanic and wanted to convert his Heavy Goods Class 1 Licence too, he had to do the NZ heavy goods licence Class 5 (equal to a UK class 1) theory test, which basically meant being asked some extra specialist questions and also provide a medical certificate, which our local doctor completed for him for $30.
I know that for some, a 'test' can be a bit daunting, but believe me when I say it was easy-peasy.
When it's your turn, just buy the Road Code book (about $25) and ALL the questions and the answers are in there. Piece of cake and nothing to be concerned about.

Well done you two!!! :raebanana
So be careful now, they will put points on your NZ license if you speed!! (just found out they don't give you points if you speed and still have a uk license - sorry 'I' didn't find that out - it was Kev who did yesterday when he was stopped and given and given a speeding ticket!!! The policeman said they don't put points on a uk license - perhaps he should hold onto his uk one for a bit longer till he learns to drive to the speed limit!)

Hey well done you two. Told you it was a piece of piddle didn't i. Was Steve caught out though on any of the truck questions, cos when you stayed here and we went through the book he looked quite perplexed at some of the questions.

But you will get the fine lass:mad: It isn't worth the hassle over the paperwork according to a traffic cop i know to do the points.

Most libraries have the road code book as well, so we studied for free. Just make sure it's a 2006 copy if you go that route, because the librarian said there had been some changes to which questions they used since the 2005 edition.

Hi Kim.
Funnily enough - no !!
He got me to test him on them all and I didn't even understand the questions let alone be capable of a stab at an answer.
I really do think that the trick is to learn all the Q's and A's 'Parrot Fashion' whether you agree with the answers or not.
As long as you pass, you don't have to agree.
The one about what to do if you break down on a motorway had me in stitches of laughter - wonder how many pieces of white underwear have been tied to car door handles....:laugh
But hey, its the law of the land and who are we poor mortals to argue??

Any difference over the (free) online edition here (http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/roadcode/)? I'm just wondering whether it's worth buying the book or sticking with studying from the online guide.

I've just had a quick squint at the Q's and A's and it seems to be the same.
I'm presuming it's the 2006 edition? I have a bell ringing in my head that tells me that new editions including new questions are published yearly in April, but I'll stand corrected. Thats why we took our as soon as we did.
Don't know if you have read the section that says that ALL questions are published in the book and that ALL your 35 test questions be taken from that list?
All we simply did was read the Q's and A's, learn the few rules that were different from the UK and bingo - 35/35......easy.
Hope this helps.

You mean they usually charge for the rule book? hunh...
So, what's the deal with "points"? Does it make your insurance go up or something...or is it some sort of demerits system where you can lose your license? Blind guesses here...

:o Uhm it's the exact same thing as what I've been studying from the book that is now a couple of days overdue. I can get it back to the library today I guess. Didn't realize this was online. Thanks!

At least it's free online - in the UK you have to cough up for the printed version.

From http://www.police.govt.nz/service/road/infringements_faq.html#3
3. What is the scale of demerit points for traffic infringements?
1-10 kms/h 10 demerit pts
11-20 kms/h 20 demerit pts
21-30 kms/h 35 demerit pts
31-35 kms/h 40 demerit pts
36 kms/h and above 50 demerit pts
If you get 100 or more demerit points within 2 years, you will be suspended from driving for 3 months.
See page 87 of the Road Code for demerit points for other offences.
There are no demerit points for speed camera tickets.
It will more than likely raise your insurance premiums too. In the UK it's 12 points (or 6 in your first 2 years of driving) and you're out, and that includes speed cameras - 3 points for most traffic offences (including from this month talking on your mobile without a hands-free kit) Over 100mph tends to be an automatic ban. I prefer the NZ system.
Thanks to everyone for the replies about the printed vs online versions of the road code.
