Hi all
Is there anyone out there who knows the correct rate paid for Electricians with 20 years experience and all the necessary qualifications? Is there a standard rate system as per JIB rates in the UK? On searching they seem to vary enormously. We are a little worried as the rates were comparable with my OH earnings 12 years ago in UK. We worry if we would be able to manage financially. Would be great if there are any Electricians out there who have made a good move. Thanking you all in advance

Just come across this thread while pottering through the pages. My friend is a sparky out here and he is paid $23 an hour, but there are other guys who are on less with the company. For some unknown reason there doesn't seem to be a across the board rate. It seems the employers just drop a rate on your doorstep and its up to you to try and negotiate. He has 20 years experience too.

well that might be the rate a sparky gets paid by an employer, but that's sure not what the homeowner gets charged for an hourly rate!!. I recently had a qualified electrician do some a few jobs in our house, and his hourly rate was $50.

We recently paid $45 / hr PLUS travel for a sparky - self-employed guy, lives locally, and were lucky to get him as they are all so busy - so much building work going on that you're lucky to find someone free to do any work... some are just doing Saturdays so I assume that's because they're working all week!

The local "Fix It" (or called something similar) franchise worked out at almost $60 an hour!! :no

think the only way to make money out here as a trades man is to be self employed. we have come across electricians here who have been paid between $18 and $25 an hour but each time you make a call out to one its in the region of $50 an hour.

Dont take any crap from a prospective employer, push for as much money as you can. They need you more than you need them. I have been out here for two years and was a bit green. I started of on $15 an hour and a local company specifically halted my registration process to keep me on low money. After leaving and then finding supposable a better employer. It has now cost me around $6000 to achive registration. After registration My wages have not risen and I am now on $20 per hour with no overtime rate. After a bit of a barney about money, (we do quite complicated on call out of hours work at a local cheese factory.) I am now leaving to start up on my own, which has not gone down well. Employers expect to own you in NZ.
Down here in the deep south the employed rate seems to be around the $24 mark. Charge out rate $40- $57
If you are any good at your job, you are going to get crap from you fellow co-workers, be warned. Still that might just be a narrow minded south island country thing. I understand the cities are a bit better
