I'm really not sure what I should ship over! Can anyone advise if they brought over there washing machine or fridge? I'm trying to covince my partner that we should bring bedding/towels over as I've heard thety are expensive-is this true? Can anyone suggest a place in Auckland to stock up on bedding.
Muchly appreciated!

Seriously ship everything you can, it'll keep costs down this end.

mc&j, I would suggest you do a search for "white goods" or ""washing machine" using the button at the top of the page as there is plenty of information available about this subject already on here.
The short answer is, bring everything unless you have plenty of cash to buy new here....(except wardrobes!)

excuse me having a bit of a general rant before answering.

RANT ON "It is so frustrating for us over here to try and answer a question when we have no knowledge of where people are from. whats the big secret all you guys have when you won't put country of origin down." RANT OFF

I have checked the public profile and my answer to this is so dependant if you are from the UK or the US or Europe etc. If its the UK and you own it and it works then bring it, even stuff like linen, the contents of the stationery drawer etc. Its not that its expensive individually here, its when you have to restock everything at the same time it hits. even silly things like staplers, pens elastic bands, all add up even though each individual item only costs a couple of dollars.

From the USA then the electrical systems are different and it would be worth getting in touch from someone from there who has already moved here for advice about what you can do, other household stuff then bring it.

If I'm right in thinking that you are from the UK then all your electrical stuff is going to work.

I brought THE LOT including all my white kitchen goods, right down to an electric alarm clock ! Decided that our under counter fridge and freezer would do as a put-me-on and later the fridge can be used for the beers whilst the freezer stores extra goodies. They do seem to go for the tall 'American' type fridge/freezers here and very nice they are too.

Really glad I brought my front loading washer and my dishwasher. I know that the majority of house here are sold/rented with a dishwasher already fitted, but they (IMHO) are not up to scratch.

Talking of washing, I've been looking to buy a dryer and I can't find a decent one for less than $600 and that's too much in my book.

I personally haven't found the bedding expensive, however having said that I have always bought good quality bedding with a high thread count - can't stand cheap stuff that pils, but I do know that there is a wide choice here varying from the cheaper stuff to the very expensive. Throws, especially the quilted ones can be a bit overpriced when compared to UK.

'Just remember that you are not coming to a third world country' (as my hubby told me when I was packing our container with Bisto Granules !) and everything that you could possibly want is available.

One thing to consider though......if you buy here you've got a guarantee (of sorts!!) It's a long way to take a fridge back to Curry's...........

Julie, I got a dryer off trademe! Works a treat and was under $50... we were lucky though!

If you have got good stuff in your house at the moment, then bring it, on the other hand if you are thinking of replacing stuff cos its worn out, maybe leave that? We bought everything, was a hassle cleaning the garden stuff, but we use it all over here, so its been worth it. You get around 10wk where you have to kind of camp out as you have no stuff, but if you can stay with rellies that end, or hire furniture this end, its not so bad!

Bring as much as you can squeeze in - it's unbelievable how much you can end up spending when you arrive otherwise and it's a pain having to buy stuff when you don't know where to go or what's a good deal.

Something we should have brought with us is a few of extension cords. We brought quite a few appliances with us (stereos, TV, toaster, etc) and had to buy 8-10 adapters to be able to plug them all in. It would have been wiser to buy one adapter, plug in the extension cord and plug in all our devices

oh yes, and bring anything made in IKEA, we were biting our nails when we saw furniture on offer here (and the prices!), especially bookshelves. If anything, you'll be able to sell IKEA stuff on Trademe as "European modern design" items for a profit!

Funny, we brought over a pair of Ikea bookshelves in their original packaging (unassembled) for fear that the NZ equivalent would be far more expensive. We were mistaken - the cost was about the same, and no assembly would have been required.

Many things here are quite expensive, but furniture and some other household goods (lamps, area rugs, midrange linens a/k/a manchester) are not. S'all made in China, after all.
