Has anyone any advice/experience of building a house in NZ?
Were planning on buying land in Hokianga and building a eco sustainable home.

eco sustainable? My uncle in Auckland is building such a home. He's done his masters in architech building of some sort and is a big fan of eco sustainability. Hot water solar panel, roof all photo-votaic panels, lots of batteries for power storage and a big power inverter.

However, I hope you're aware of the huge costs you're looking at spending. Even so getting the best tradesmen in NZ would only get you an average build quality house by Scandinavian standards. You're asking to build a house that most builders have no idea or clue how to go about...

Ah! You see, this is why I plan to bring along my copy of the Canadian Building Standards that I got when I was taking my Civil Engineering course.

It'll at least give the builder some idea as to what I have in mind.

We are hoping to one day build a house in NZ using ICF or similar construction methods. I designed my parents home that uses BlueMaxx-Arcx (or competitor - can't remember) block in 1998. It seems that the popularity of such materials is starting to grow in NZ; however, it will probably take quite a while to catch up to demand and high standards.
