Hey that's a nice place - can see why he'd like it. We may downsize as we fell in to the big is beautiful trap a little more than we'd have liked, there's only the two of us. Mind you, I know plenty who would turn their noses up at it! Each to their own!

I wondering what ideal home in NZ for other people? big, newish, beach house, farmhouse, rural, seaside, town centre locations etc........For us we prefer rural with no close neighbours, a nice patch of land (i'm talking an acre or two here, not a lifestyle block, we already have jobs!), in a location we love. Size doesn't come in to it, we've looked at some teeny tiny cottages in the middle of nowhere that would do us just fine - it all comes down to where it is and if we like the area.

Before coming here we'd always lived in old houses, I'm talking 100/200/300 yr old places and I was NEVER going to live in a new houses... now I'm in a relatively new house (30 yrs) and loving it so I'd never say never now and keep an open mind.

For us location is the key feature after considering commutes.

We used live in small three bed cottage, beautiful in rural village, 20mins from main town. But decided move to bigger house in town before we had children. Lovely house but too big mean more more housework. It was hard with young children and work at night to look after house.
This is reasons why we are now looking for a house in rural with good size plot for children to run around and house not too big this time to allow me to spend time outside doing growing own vegetable patch and looking after animals!! bit like barbara and tom in 'Good Life' :laugh :laugh :laugh

Oooh, hard one, we have got a 60's kiwi style house, with mod cons as its been done up. But its half weatherboard/half brick, and tin roof, with no insulation.... brrrrr on the coldest winter mornings (even the dog wants slippers!) but its on a full section, which was one the major bonuses.

However we are now considering a move to something more modern, but it means a compromise in section size, which we are not sure we want to do.... but then again the back garden here is just for decoration and parking the cars mostly, but does have some good fruit trees.

It is such a personal decision, and you need to try them out really before you truly know whats what....

ours is an old (1920's) villa. big for us but small compared to most of the houses people on here are talking about - but then there's only the two of us. we're right next to the town belt - so bush views and sheltered from the wind. done up so modern kitchen and bathrooms plus central heating and insulation. most importantly for us we're walking distance to work.

everyone needs their own thing - its about finding out what that thing is for you.

My ideal house would be in the middle of nowhere, nestling in some hills, but a nice town nearish, and would be one of those lovely period villas - lots of original features, coving, panelling, old doors, about an acre or so of land, no neighbours, mmmmm.....

My ideal home would be an old villa, but one that hasn't been modernised beyond recognition in Ponsonby, Herne Bay, St Marys Bay area of Auckland. Three bedrooms and a resonable size section that hasn't been subdivided into something the size of a hanky. And for less than 750K...
Seems to be a complete pipedream though unfortunately as I've been looking for about 3 months now and nothing is quite right yet. I may start to expand my search to include other suburbs, but won't be too far from Auckland CBD - I still like partying too much to pay a king's ransom for a cab home at night to the outer suburbs and I like to be able to get out easily to the west coast beaches to go surfing.
