I've read several threads dealing with salaries, cost of living etc. I think that most of the people who are concerned about whether they would be able to live off their salaries, are those with families (read: Lots of kids:) ). I don't think that the bachelors/bachelorettes (geez, what horrible words!) have a similar problem, or am I mistaken? I am single, early 30's with no partner or kids. For me, coming to NZ is therefore just a matter of packing up a few things and getting on the plane! Having said that, I need to find a lessee for my furnished house (I've decided not to sell until I've checked out the NZ scene), but besides that, it's relatively easy for me.
OK, so I'll be living in Hamilton and my salary will be in the early 70K. Now, I think that although I won't live like Donald Trump, I would be able to survive quite comfortably on that salary. I'm not part of the salmon and caviar set, so I don't intend to spend my money on that sort of thing. I also don't drink or smoke, so that's a substantial saving! However, I do like to start my morning with a coffee and something to munch on. As long as I'm able to pay for coffee, an ADSL connection, a couple of books, gym membership and a couple of other basics, I'll be a happy chappy.
Oh, Hamilton is probably more affordable than Auckland, Wellington or C/Church, not so??
Comments are welcome!

I would expect that as a non smoking, non drinking, single with no kids you could live comfortably on over 70K. However as a non smoker, non drinker with no kids would you want to live comfortably?

Yeah. Who can call that living.
People are posting with their concern about surviving with a family of 4 on $45,000. I don't think you'll have a problem.
Unless this was a carefully crafted personal ad ...
;)

DEFINITELY not a personal ad! I'm very happily unattached.

Hiya,
I don't think you'll have any probs on that income :nice1
Just to give you an idea of some costs.... my hubby pays $88 pm for a decent gym in Auckland and we pay $100 pm for a good *reliable* internet connection that more than fullfills his downloading needs :D
Buying coffee here seems so much cheaper than in the UK. I would expect to pay between $3-$4 for a coffee depending on the size of the mug/soup bowl!

$73K in Hamilton will be fine. Cost of living in Hamilton is pretty cheap when compared to Auckland. You can rent a pretty decent place for a couple of hundred a week.
Even if you did want to join the champagne and caviar set you won't find many of them down there - they are more sausage roll and Waikato Draught...

It all depends on what you mean by comfortable.
I'm in a similar situation to you, but in Wellington, and my first pay check went way past the end of the month - and I enjoyed the occasional beer.:cheers

Hey at this rate we'll soon have enough forum members in this area to have our own Waikato meet up! I'm always jealous when I see "Welly rocks in the bush" etc. We could have a "Waikato rocks at the dairy farm". Bring your own sausage rolls. When you arriving Oliver?

I'll be the dazed, confused and very jetlagged guy that arrives in Hamilton on the 1st flight in from Auckland on 27 April! That's to say, if all goes well at tomorrow's medical! :raebanana
