Hi there
Are there any South Africans that have done a trip to NZ via Oz and actually spent a few days in Oz? We have been told that we need a visa for Oz (even though its only for 3 days...)
Would anyone be able to tell us how they went about getting it and how long it takes? The websites seem rather confusing in this regard!
Thanks.

haven't done it myself but seen lots do it at the backpackers here, it has always seemed straightforward for them to just apply online pay by CC and take the paper copy in their passport.

That's why I'm flying via Singapore. The Oz visa is apparently a major schlep. You need to apply to the Oz High Commission in Pretoria, but if you book the flight throught a travel agent, they will usually help with the visa application.

if you want to enter OZ you need a visa. Major hassle. Got mine in 2005 in Rosebank through the OZ High Commission. Tickets, bank statements etc. Do it in good time.

Snip.
Just read that South Africa isn't included on the list of internet bookable visas so afraid I can't be of any help.

Its very easy for many countries to do it the simple electronic route, http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ETAAus1En.html but unfortunately it would appear not for South Africans.... looks like you guys have to do it the long way via an embassy, about which I have not got a clue, sorry...

You do need a visa for OZ if you are from SA and will be staying on for a while.
If you are in transit for more than 8 hours up to max 72 hours you need a transit visa.
If you are in transit for less than 8 hours, you dont need a visa but cant leave the transit lounge.
