 Am I correct in my assumption that if you have a job offer you do not need to get qualifications assessed by NZQA?(claiming points for work experience in area of LSSL)

I'm not sure.... my understanding is that if your EOI is selected during/ after Dec 2006 (when the rules changed), you must have full NZQA before you submit the ITA. However, if you have a job offer, you can submit the ITA without the full assessment, but your job might still require that you have one (in which case you could submit it after your ITA has been filed).

Hmmm...now that I write that I'm less sure. Maybe someone who understands the new rule better can reply...? Any takers?

Thank you Chris. Let's hope somebody can clarify 100%. I do find the NZQA website a little confusing that maybe just because I'm blonde!:roll

thats right - you only need the NZQA assessment if you don't have a job offer.

edited to add: that of course is only regarding the change to the rules. if you would have needed an assessment before Decembers changes then obviously you'll still need one (eg if the qualification isn't on the recognised quals list)

......Well, except in certain career fields: I'm a teacher, and no matter what, I need a full assessment (even though my quals are on the list)

If you want to claim the points for the qualification & your qualification isn't on the recognised list then, job offer or not, yes you do need to get NZQA assessment.

My OH had enough points luckily with job offer to not have to bother with qualification evaluation, however, if we had been short of points he would have had to have been assessed regardless of the fact he had a job offer. Hope this is clear.

you need to see these as separate things.

1. as sarah says if your qual isn't on the recognised list you need NZQA even just to get basic points for it (job offer or not is irrelevant).

2. since december even if your quals are on the recognised list you will still need NZQA if you dont have a job offer and you want to get bonus points for your quals or work exp being in an area of absolute shortage.

3. some careers require NZQA for governing body registration - if you work in these areas you will need it regardless.

Thank you to everyone for the input. I think I now understand. As Hubby is an Electrician we will need assessment for registration purposes anyway. My Hubby and I have some serious discussing to do this weekend - whether we move or not? It's too much cash to throw away unless absolutely:yes sure it's the right thing to do.:roll

Yes you are right it is a huge amount of money. We have been thinking too and decided that it is ONLY money we have to loose if things don't work out think about the wealth of the experience gained for you and yours :yes . I always think that in years to come I will always wonder 'What if'......... I personally would rather try it out. Plan a great reccy trip to help you decide, only a suggestion!
