Hi

I hope someone can answer this, I think I know what the answer is but I am hoping the answer I am looking for is out there. (I really just want to double double check the answer really)

Myself and hubby are seeking employment (already over in NZ now). Hubby is looking for mechanic job and myself administration (Import Administrator). Now do I have to wait for hubby to get the job FIRST before I can get a job OR can I have a go and get one first to bring in some income. We both want residency.

It's only that there is a brilliant job going in Christchurch that is exactly what I am looking for and pretty good pay as well.

Please let me know what you think. If I have to wait for hubby first, then that's ok.

As OH is a mechanic, and as this role is on the LTS list then i would suggest you wait as i don't think that your role is there. If you wish you could apply for a WV for 2 years on this role of yours and apply for residency at a later date, but then you could just bide your time and hit the PR route running. If you go on your role you must be able, or should i say the employer to prove that they have tried there best to employ a local. OH should be able to find that job without any worries as they are always advertising for Mechanics wherever you go.

Good luck with it.

I would apply for the job you have found.
Even though it is easier for your OH to gain WV & SM PR, it still takes time to find a job offer or process a PR application.
So personally I would recommend having some income coming in during this period.

As Kim highlighted it is easier for you OH to gain a WV, though as your background matches the role you have found, it would also be possible for an employer to show why they want to offer the job to you.

Hi Lisa.

Why not take the job if it is offered to you??

I'm sure that you wouldn't say 'no' to the money and like Kim says, mechanics are always wanted - I know 'cos I'm married to a diesel mechanic !!

Surely you could both go down the PR route with your hubby's qualifications, especially when he gets a job too.

Just my thoughts, that's all...............

Good luck whatever you decide.

Go for the job and see if you can get it, then apply for a workvisa, you can follow it up with PR later

If this job could be said to be skilled (I work in information management - not on the skills shortage list but I got a permit no probs because they accepted the job was skilled, and there were no suitable NZ applicants) you should be able to get a work permit for it. If you do, then your husband can get a work permit too on the basis you have one. You will then be able to claim work experience in New Zealand, which will give you a lot of points when you submit an expression of interest for residency.
