Hello Everyone
We are a couple working in Paris (I'm from Mauritius and been living in France for the past 7 years and my partner is French) We are hoping to move to New Zealand in 2008 and we know this is going to be a long process. I'm going to be the principal applicant and at the moment I am gathering or "trying to gather" all documents for the NZQA assessment. We thought this should be the first step as if my qualification is not recognised there no point going any further. Unfortunately all the documents required by NZQA are in french and I think the translation is going to be very very expensive...
I'd like to thank everyone for all the useful information on the forum. At first we wanted to use an agent but when discovered this forum we thought that maybe we should give it a try!! I'll let you know how things work out for us

Bon Jour,
I agree that getting your quals assessed is a good starting point. Hope it doesn't prove to be too expensive for you.
Good luck and welcome to the forum

Bonjour
Welcome to the forum. It has been a wealth of knowledge to us. Lots of friendly people. We were put off using an agency as they are very expensive and it can be done by yourselves especially with the help of these guys.
You are correct to get NZQA first. We didn't and are now having to really rush to get together all the info. Good luck with it all and I'm sure if you want it enough you will succeed. Why do you want to emigrate by the way?:)

Hi Dilou,
Welcome to the forum :)
I'm originally from France (Paris) but moved to the UK and have been in Auckland for a little over a year now, so it's good to see a few French people around. Good luck with the paperwork and the immigration process and hope everything goes to plan for you :nice1

Salut!
We've recently emigrated over from Lyon to Auckland. I definitely would recommend getting your NZQA stuff done first as it does take a long time to get everything translated and then it took around 3 months for us to receive the qualification from NZQA.
For the translations, yes they are very expensive although we found a certified translator who agreed to put his stamp on documents we translated ourselves. He obviously looked at the documents first before doing that but the price was greatly reduced as a result.
It's just a case of spending time finding the most agreeable translator.
Good luck.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
Why do we want to emigrate?
Mainly because life is too hectic in Paris and we can't imagine having children here. And it has always been some kind of dream for me to move to New Zealand as my parents lived in Wellington fro two years when I was small. They always wanted to go back and have always told me how they were happy in New Zealand. The only thing we're not so sure about is how my partner's parents will react about their son wanting to move so far away.
Starkhorn, I take it you had your quals assessed by NZQA. Maybe you can help me. I did a Deug MIAS (diploma in maths and IT applied to science) and then entered a school where I completed a Msc Computer Science and Management. Do I need to send the curriculum for the Deug or is it not necessary as it is the MSc which is important? One of my teachers sent me a certified copy of the Deug curriculum and it has 8 pages (and everything is writen is tiny letters). Some traslators aks 50 euros for one page and there is no way I can traslate it myself. You probably know how maths is in france. When I read the curriculum I don't even understand how I even managed to get this diploma, everything seems so complicated. We are even considering having the translation done by a translator in New Zealand...

Actually it was my wife's qualifications that needed to go through NZQA.
Well about the whole NZQA process I don't remember how much we paid for the translations but I think that we actually saved a lot of money...
NZQA wants everything for each year of study (started from the bac and then each year from there). For each year they want the diplom itself or proof that you passed and the mark sheets. They also want a complete academic curriculum for each year of university or specialized study. For all these documents, you need to provide the original, a certified photocopy I think, and of course an official translation.
The diploms and mark sheets are a right pain in the neck to translate and many certified translators even refuse to do them because it's too boring. I struggled so much to find someone who would do it that I ended up translating it myself. Of course it needs to be cetrified, so I found a certified translator who accepted to check my translations and take responsibility for it by stamping it.

Sounds like there's a business there for someone with good translation skills? ;)

Hi Dilou
It's good to see some French people on here. I am English but I am a confirmed Francophile. I hope I can find a French person in Christchurch as I am worried I am going to lose my spoken French. Not that it's brilliant but nonetheless would hate to lose what has taken 20 years to acquire.
Anyway, good luck with the process Dilou
Julie
