This is one of those questions that could be answered within one day of being in New Zealand...but until I get there I know some of you can respond!

We're still in the US and one of the things that drives me mad in the grocery are all the magazines at the check-out/cashier - all of them blaring a million ways women should hate their bodies...er, I mean, lose weight..."Lose 25 pounds in 3 hours", "How to Trim Your Waistline Down (to a Level You Really can Never Achieve)", "Forget Eating Well - Here are 5 Medications You Can Down to Keep from Absorbing Nutrients".

Okay, maybe I'm exagerating a bit but on EVERY magazine cover (excepting the Country Cottage magazine) invite us to read further about weight loss. The girls in our culture grow up looking at this garbage as they wait in line with mum or dad waiting to buy toothpaste or milk.

Billboards litter our highways and blast their unsolicited messages to buy beer, look like an air-brushed model, and watch trashy TV right into our cars...

Are magazines in NZ as extreme as here in the US? Is the message to lose weight as in your face there as it is here? Are concerns about a rising epidemic of eating disorders as high in NZ as it is in the US?

If it's not the magazine rubbish you see at the check out counter, you'll definitely see it on prime time TV. Just look at shows like Sex in the City, Desperate Housewives, and a 100 more in in the past decade. They all reflect an image of beauty and fashion around evolved around relationships. Kids learn this from such a young age and what you have is a society that over 50% go in divorce. I'm sure if there were more wealthy teenage girls, you'll see more "Sweet Super 16 Party" in NZ

I'm afraid the wrath of Hollywood is no different here than in the US. BTW, swear words are not censored on NZ tv late a night.

Have to say that I haven't noticed them where we live, but we are not in a city.

Don't know about eating disorder epidemics, butI believe that extreme pressure to loose weight via the glossy mags and media is virtually everywhere - don't you.

Oh well, looks like we can't get away from it eh??

Or even on the radio - listen to the local station in a morning and I'm quite shocked by some of the stuff they say!!:uhoh

Have to disagree with that observation..NO-WHERE is as 'Hollywood' as America. It's about the same here as in UK but I've managed to avoid any of it so far :D ... you know if nobody bought it they wouldn't print it, let's work on that :exit

Perhaps it works better in waking people up than a cup of Coffee first thing in the morning. :)

Actually having lived in Los Angeles I can tell you that it is not nearly as bad here. In fact, it always surprises me when I see the rugby cheerleaders. They actually have hips and tummies....you would never see those bodies at a Laker game or any other professional sport. Yes, the "American Hollywood" attitude makes its way here but it is not to the same extent...not by a long shot.
