Has anyone ever shipped a caravan ?
I've seen a few threads about this but has anyone ever done it. I'm interested to know appox how much it cost ? and whether you do have to pay tax if it is under a year old ? They are so expensive in NZ it seems the best option. I have emailed customs as caravans seem to be a grey area not car not household effects.

We had a discussion about this at the last north west meet. Seems that good modern caravans are in short supply in NZ and so are more expensive than uk.

I am waiting for a quote on shipping a VW camper (kombi) with my other personal effects although it is very unlikely that we will do this (import regs on rust to vehicles is too much of a concern for a 1970 vehicle).

If you take a caravan you can only put inside it anything that you would normally have inside for a week away, you cannot fill it with all your furniture and belonging etc. This is likely to mean that you would need a 40ft container not a 20ft.

Once we get our quotes I will let you know

I'd bring it knowing what we have seen just up the road from us in Ohaupo. This is their link, but don't be fooled by the website cos the stuff they have out on the showcourt is crap and battered. Haven't seen any of the ones they have on this website.

We are considering taking our 18ft motor home and out current quotes are by RO RO ferry. Anglo Pacific -£3.488.00, John Masons -£3,400-00.
Anglo Pacific will collect from home & take it to Southampton, with John Mason you take it to southampton yourself. You do have to pay tax but it seems it is on a sliding scale depending how many months you have owned it.

It sounds a lot of money but it still works out cheaper than buying one in NZ
You can get all the customs and other details from WWW.landtransport.govt.nz
I phoned them & found them extremely helpful Tel No (04)08189
Hope this helps you.

Just check they dont have to be steamed cleaned. I think there is a requirment to have vehicle and bikes..ie any thing that comes in contact with soil...cleaned and have a cert.

The very nice people at nz customs will steam clean your vehicle for you when you get to the other side.
Obviously they will also charge you for this.
If you have any rust on your vehicle the customs will ask to have it removed and rewelded. Any previous repair work also will need to be redone to NZ standards.
This is why we are no longer looking at taking our camper.:wah :wah :wah
