This thread (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6142) has a good overview of the process, although in December there were some additonal requirements added for skilled migrants without a job offer claiming bonus points. See this thread (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10514) for some details.
I don't know anything about applying for the police, but I know there are posts about it... click on search near the top of the page and search for threads on 'police'.
Welcome to the forum! :)
It's less overwhelming once you figure out all the steps and then take them one by one. Best of luck.

The NZ Police are doing a major recruitment campaign so they are definitely looking for qualified people, I was a State Constable in Pennsylvania USA but I decided not to apply to the NZ Police for a few reasons, the first is that you must attend the Police College for 6 months, it's great that they offer the training but I'm at the stage in my life where I just don't want to be in a classroom for 6 months, the second is that you must be willing to go where they need you which is most likely Auckland, my wife and I prefer to live in Christchurch, the third is that I would have to make some major lifestyle changes to lose enough weight to pass the physical fitness test, the test is designed for people that are light on their feet, which I am not.
The Prison Service is hiring Corrections Officers, the training is 8 weeks and the pay is 43K compared to 50K for NZ Police but there are a lot of opportunities for advancement, the physical fitness test is also less intense than what NZ Police require, they have openings on the North Island but the South Island is currently full, I'm in the process of getting on the list to take a position when one opens in Christchurch.
