I only stumbled upon this website a few days ago and it has already answered so many questions , relief!:)
We're both primary teachers with 3 kids, (5yrs, 8yrs and 17 yr old daughter) looking to emigrate hopefully this year. We've been talking/stressing/agonising about it for over 18 months now but unfortunately had the millstone of an unfinished 5 bed victorian house to renovate, well we're just about finished and it's going on the market today.
Sent off our NZQA December and have had the docs returned but don't know when their 20 working days starts from, so waiting on that before registering as teachers.
Submitted our EOI in December too, on the offchance, but looking at the previous selections we're on a slim chance of being picked out without a job offer. Only have 115 points as primary teachers are not on the skill shortage list. My wife's early childhood education experienced but not quite 2 years minimum in a nursery to qualify.
So unless we get lucky with noone else applying that fortnight then I think we'll have to take a gamble!
We're planning on getting everything in order, eg registrations, documents etc, shipping our stuff and travelling over in August for the 6 months as visitors to the South Island. We'll start off with a month in a camper van to take in some of the sights and then head to Christchurch poss.
Seems like the main recruitment for teachers is October for a February start , in which case I'll be applying for any jobs I can find and praying. :uhoh If I get one then I hope we'll get residency or at least a work visa, if not then we'll have to leave in 6 months, on to Australia I suppose :no
Seems from the other threads that quite a few people have done this too, "leap of faith" as another put it!
We are desperate for any info from primary teachers regarding chances of getting jobs in October, areas of primary teacher shortages (pref not Auckland) and if anyone has had experience of the NZIS1113 which is the form necessary to offer a non-kiwi a job proving no other NZ'ers were suitably experienced/qualified etc. This looks quite a short form and might be a formality or then again maybe not!
Anyway a bit of a dull and lengthy hello but we shall continue browsing and enjoying your comments, so many like-minded people! Have got loads more Q's but will search for some answers first.
Regards Mike and Stef
