I haven't seen this anywhere, apologize if it is in an older thread. On the off chance that our pr isn't granted before we move to NZ in June, we are wondering about our dogs/cat. Does anyone know if you can bring your pets to NZ and deal with the quarantine etc if you have not been granted pr? :hopeso Or do we have to leave them here and have someone else send them when we receive our pr? Thanks in advance!

As far as I know you must have at least a work visa, or student etc. Friends of ours who came over on a holiday visa with the intention of getting a job had to transfer the ownership of their cats to a friend over here, then the shipping was done in the friends name. Once they had their job and own work visa the ownership was transferred back to them.

Really? Can you ask them how they did that? We have cousins in Christchurch who would probably be willing to do that for us. Thanks!

The dogs have to be chipped to travel and they just put the chip details under the other name. and the people the new zealand side did the picking up etc. After a bit they just changed the details with the chip registration here.

We are shipping our pets and we do not have PR or any visa as of yet. We got the permit to import without any need to show documentation like PR or a visa. I do not think you will have a problem.

Can someone clear this up for me ?

I'm bringing a dog into NZ in the new year from the UK. If he's got all his shots and is microchipped, does he need to go through quarintine ?

from what i've read, they have to have all their shots -and- be quarantined. i'd be pleased to learn that i'm wrong, but i don't think you can get around the quarantine.

I do know that cats from the UK do not need to be locked up for months. Its probably the fact that the UK is rabies free.
I do believe that they had to sign a form to say they would keep the cat indoors for a while.
I think this subject was discussed a while ago on another thread.

Cheers

The guide I have says your dog does not need to go through quarantine if it's coming from the UK, Australia or Hawaii. For all other countries (and the other 49 US states), it's at least 30 days of quarantine.

I'm late to the party, but I'll throw an opinion in here.

I'll be brining my dog from the states when I move to NZ(if, I suppose). At any rate, I'd feel terrible putting him through the flight and quarantine just to have to do it again in 3 months. That's why I won't move him (and pay the ~$3500) without having the PR lined up. Just too much stress on him and too much money to spend moving them back and forth. But this is just my thought process.

I'm sure the MAF website has info on whether you can import a dog without PR. I don't remember reading anything about that, but reading the other replies here it looks like there are issues.

Just make sure you have everything set up in time. I believe you need a rabies titre for your dog 6 months prior to the move. Under certain circumstances, I believe 4 months will suffice, but in most cases it's 6.

Also, I forgot who posted it, but the chips most rescues/vets use here in the states are set to a different frequency than those required in NZ. Another thing to look out for that's unrelated to your original post :)

If you or someone else finds out definite information, can you link it here?

Thanks.

J

I brought our dog in from Belgium in November without having work permit or PR, I just needed to provide a copy of my visitor visa.

lesly did your dog have a pets passport or come over on an import permit. Was there any quarantine involved.

Our dog had an import permit, and yes, our dog has been quarantined for 30 days at Qualified Pet Services in Takanini, Auckland.
The dog hated to be in quarantine, but she survived, she's doing fine now.

Cheers, Lesly :P
