I am trying to figure out how to let my two Newfies have their dog beds in quarantine. I don't want them lying on the hard floor, especially our oldest who is ten years old and arthritic.

Has anyone shipped over dog beds? I can't imagine MAF would let me ship used beds. I could order new ones and ship them on our container but the container would never get there in time for them to use the beds in quarantine. Alternatively, I could order new ones and ship them directly to the quarantine facility? How expensive would that be, I wonder?!

Any ideas, or clever solutions?

If I were you, I would contact the quarantine facility that you will be using direct and get them to arrange it for you. You could always buys beds off the internet and arrange to have them delivered to the facility so that you know you're happy with the quality. I guess they'll mainly need them to be washable won't they?
Good luck - 2 Newfies - that must =$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I think dog beds are quite expensive here so I would buy them and then ship them as they should be fairly light weight. If you can plan ahead you can ship US Mail "slow boat"...plan on it taking 8 weeks. I have shipped a lot of stuff this way and it all has arrived no problems. And if you are spending the coin to ship the big boys here in the first place, what's a few more dollars on some cushy bedding for them...

I'll second Park City Partner. Buy them and ship them here. We brought our small dog's bed in our luggage when we flew over. Just cleaned it first and had no problems. If you're worried about the state of the beds at all, you can buy new ones and ship.

When we arrived at Q. on day 2 with the bed, the nice folks at Shado-Lans Quarantine had already put down their own bed and blankets for her, and had the radio running in her room in the day for a little sound. So I hope your dogs wouldn't have to spend time on just the floor until you get there! If you have a question about it ask the Q. facility you'll be using. I'd be surprised if they didn't provide something themselves.

Definitely ask the quarantine kennel if they have their own bedding - we had 2 dogs at shado-lans which supplied beds and blankets for them. Our older dog likes to hide under something when he sleeps for whatever reason & when we visited they had even stuffed a bed under a table for him since they noticed he was sleeping on the bare floor under it.

We priced dog beds here, and WOW are they more expensive than we're used to in the States - I wish we'd bought a big dog pillow at cosco and shipped it in the container!

We did include bedding for our older dog in the shipping crate - it was new, as it happened, but the shippers didn't seem to care. USDA inspectors don't care either. The quarantine facility did not dispose of it (though we forgot to reclaim it when we retrieved our dogs).

So you can ship bedding with your dogs, as well as toys and items with your smell on them. (No food.) Check with your shipper for their restrictions.

Thanks for the suggestions. Their beds won't fit in the crates so we bought beds especially designed for their huge crates. (I hope their beds fit in NZ-sized homes! They may need their own bedroom!)

I think we will buy the beds here and ship them slow mail since we they don't arrive until 26 April. They'll need them anyway for after quarantine.

My dog went to the kennel in the UK with his quilt type bed as I wanted something smelling familiar to him there. Also as he is 70kg he gets sores on his knees if he sleeps on a hard floor for to long. They were happy to put it in the crate with him as it was soft, (he couldn't have had a ridged bed in there) which I thought was great. I expected MAF to take it away when he landed but they were happy that he keep it, he hadn't soiled it at all during the flight.
Dog bits are expensive here so may be worth emailing MAF and the kennel and checking what they will allow in and posting over anything you want extra.
