My other half and I hoping to move to NZ early next year but are still trying to research jobs etc. Is there anyone out there around the Invercargill area who can give us an idea of where to look for that area i.e newspapers, agencies, web sites etc. For info at the moment my OH is a tiler and I work for the local council but would consider something different!

Thanks in advance!!!:yes

My home town:

Local paper is the Southland Times - but their online jobs are listed on Trademe.co.nz

Also try seek.co.nz

If you wanted to stay in local authority work try,

city council: http://www.icc.govt.nz/icc/index.cfm?259F66BC-DEAE-246E-A7BD-B63F0AC20CAD

district council: http://www.southlanddc.govt.nz/sdc_shadomx/index.cfm?F715E182-D61D-A7A6-29DA-09D1DA2D4B7B

nothing up on those at the moment, but they tend to have a vacany a week for something or another.

Invercargill isn't so big that you'd gain anything by going through an agency. It's also the sort of place where wandering in off the street with your CV in person is going to get you a lot further than emails from the other side of the world.

Katandbob should be able to help you more since they're living just outside In'gill and she works for the council and he's in trades - I'm a bit out of touch over here in the UK. But if you have any specific questions about Invercargill or Southland in general, feel free to ask on here or PM me.

Thanks Wiki. My OH has a few things in the pipeline so fingers crossed one of them will work out but trying to get an idea of salaries etc to make sure we will be able to keep our heads above water.
Do you know if there is much of a call for PT admin staff in that area?

Thanks!!

By PT do you mean part time?

There's always a need for good admin staff all over the place.

Hello Saralou, as Wiki says, there is always a good need for admin - I applied for 4 jobs and had interviews for 3 in a week.

I took the council job as it was 2 mins walk from our rental - I now have a 20 min commute from where we live but its one easy road!- Bluff Hwy then down a back road through the back end of In'gill.

You will have no probs getting part-time admin work - when you get here, theres no point in emailing when your not going to be here for months.

We have just taken on 3 admin staff at work so book mark the site and keep an eye on it, you could apply for one before you fly, and then you'd probably get an interview.

Also the Southland council office is on Clyde St, so thats in the middle of town too, and theres Environment Southland - a separate building

There are accountants. lawyers. etc...loads of businesses,

if you have any questions - just ask, Southland is a great place for outdoor stuff, I am off to the Catlins next week on a weekend trek, so that will be a new experience for me.

Oh and the houses are cheaper here too, although there are a few that are over $699,000:uhoh mansion types!
http://www.invercargillproperty.co.nz/ heres a site that shows you a sample of whats available, and we went though Ray Whites for rentals, they were very good. I could give their number if you wanted it in the future.

well I better get outside and see to the animals

Thanks Kat,
I'm sure we will be asking lots of questions in the coming months. We've had to take a step back for the moment as OH mum is ill and we have both decided we need to spend a final crimbo in the UK as our last one was in invercargill! Am hoping we can really get our teeth into things in the summer and hope to make the move very early next year. Housing not too much of a problem as we can bunk down with my dad for a while.
Sorry to ramble on but I just get so excited everytime I start thinking about it, even my daughter, who is 6, has started deciding which toys to take!
