I'm just full of questions today!! :laugh
I am targeting a couple of specific communities for job search. In one, there are only 4 secondary schools and one trade school through which I might get a job. I know the odds aren't great, but rather than wait for an opening, I wonder if it is acceptable to contact each school with my CV and desire for a teaching job should a vacancy occur?
I feel helpless waiting and watching the job ads until Sep-Dec, which is when (I've been told) that most teaching positions become available.
Here in the US, you can put your application and CV on file with a school for up to a year, making contact every few weeks to let them know you are still interested, etc. That way when a posistion is available, the applicants on file get called first regardless of the advertisement.
So, are things done this way in NZ, too, or should I wait for an ad to appear in the gazette?
I just feel like I should be doing something to speed up our PR process!! :exit
Advice appreciated.

I just heard of someone getting a job this way (can't remember their name, but they are on the board here, and are from Idaho)- but their field was technology I think. My OH has sent his out to 4 places, gotten ignored 3 times and been told no by the last place. But I don't really think it can hurt and you might get a yes!

There is nothing to stop you applying in this way. Mr Rr sent letters and CV to 12 schools here in Dunners when we were coming down. Only one of them replied, and that was to say thanks but no thanks... But you never know. When you are limited in where you can apply for work, it's a case of being in the right place at the right time so you might as well get your CV in now.

I totally agree with all the good advice above. Nothing ventured nothing gained. The worst case scenario, they will say no thanks. Big deal. What if it works? I am in the same boat, have not really applied a lot just about half dozen spots and had a couple of interviews so far(job offer -thats another story). Good luck

We have sent out Steve's CV to 40+ companies in Welly. It was not fun:o
We found the companies through the yellow pages, trade me, and by putting in various searches in google (and getting LOTS of advice from the kind folks on this forum:nice1 ). While this hasn't resulted in overseas job offers, it did get us 3 interviews with recruiters and 2 with companies during our reccy. Steve's IT skills aren't as scarce as some. We also gained a dinner invite from a Kiwi who saw Steve's CV come through his company, as this guy has some US expat friends he thought could help out with advice and leads! I hope the recriters can get us more interviews while we are there, and we will scour the classifieds as well. Alot of the companies emailed us to say they had no openings but would keep his CV on file. I don't know how relevant my post is to this thread, but I hope it will give hope to the other hopefuls out there!

We used just 1 agency and they managed to line up four interviews for my OH to attend during first week of reccie and he was offered jobs for all four of them :roll. I try to remember the name of agency we used if you are interesting, I am not sure if they do teaching jobs, but worth a try...

Thank you all for your helpful advice! I better get moving on rewriting my CV. I have tinkered with it, but it is currently the too-short American type CV and I need to "kiwi-ize" it a bit more! :p
I feel better knowing it's not a faux pas to send it out unsolicited (not that I want to give myself more work, mind you...but...)....at least I'll be doing something toward getting a job offer faster.
I'm mostly not keen on waiting for the ITA to find its way to the top of the queue on its own...who knows when THAT could be!!!!?? :roll

I've been thinking about the same thing and we haven't even put in our EOI yet. i've been checking out the Ed Gazette and seen a couple of posts that make the school sound interesting (not even decided where to go yet) and I e-mailed them with my CV just out of interest. One has replied saying thanks for your interest but that was all. Well, you never know do you?
