Just curious....for those of you who got a job offer while still in your home country, how long did the NZ employer hold the job for you while you got PR sorted and house packed, etc? Are they generally understanding about this?

I know it varies according to career field, location, etc., but I'd like to hear your specific experience and time frames.

Thanks!

They are very happy to hold my OH's job for up to 1 year while get PR and house sorted. He was offered in April 2006 and we arrived in October and didn't start work till mid-nov even his boss told him to wait longer if he wish as we haven't got our shipping yet. But my OH want to started :roll

We met Kev's prospective employers at the manchester expo in oct 05, he had an interview (in the pub for an hour!!) with them in Jan 06, and offered him a job, we got out here 15th Nov, and he started work with them on 5th December 06.

I was offered a job from the Minestry of Education. They made it clear they would be happy to wait at least 6 months, but I came sooner.

hells bells, but you all were VERY lucky! I had my interview on 15 January and my employers wanted me to start on 1 March, which was just impossible! I'm due to start on 1 May, but even that is a stretch considering all the immigration formalities. I hope all my things are sorted out by end of April!

My OH was told by a recruitment consultant (engineering) they would normally hold a job for 2 months, perhaps even 3. Not sure how accurate that is though.

Haven't quite made up my mind whether recruitment consultants should be deemed the same as estate agents!

Company who offered me my original position waited 16 months until we arrived, met them few days after arriving and ditched the job as we couldn't see us settling in Auckland. I made my excuses and managed to get something here in the Waikato. In fact they were very understanding even if they did keep the offer open for so long.

Im looking into jobs at the moment, it is really promising to hear how long employers will wait, I was a little anxious about applying this early ( hope to relocate in Nov), but judging by responses, this is probably the right time.

We took 14 months from being offered a job until we arrived as hubby had to get quals and registration sorted - also I was pregnant and wanted to have the baby in the UK before coming out. His employer was very understanding and had our house not sold when it did he would have kept the job open indefinitely.

Good luck.
