I'll be looking to renew my household & contents insurance soon, any one got any recommendations?

Also we have an old villa (1900) and when I was first trying to arrange buildings insurance some companies said they would need to send an assessor round first. Has this happened to anyone? We didn't have enough time for this so I went with the company who already insured the villa for the previous owners. So it probably wasn't the best deal.

In the UK I use to use Which? to find the current cheapest deal, but I don't think Consumer does it (unless I missed that issue!).

Cheers

Hi Tia,

I subscribe to the online version of Consumer & they did a report on home insurance on May 8 2006 - I don't know if that is the same as the print version.

We have AA for our rental contents insurance since we got a discount for having the car & apartment contents insured by them & they were rated by Consumer as good for car insurance for our situation (one car, drivers around age 40).

I am embarrassed to admit I didn't call around to other companies for quotes (usually I am really good about comparison shopping) since we needed insurance for a car quickly & I figured when I got more time I'd look into switching.

Hi we have an even older house Jen!

The isurance company needed a electrical survey before they would insure. I have been told this is standard for old houses. Not a bad idea to get one done anyway, esp if its not been rewired.

hey Jen,
can you (or anyone) tell me how closely related NZ's AA is to US's AAA? We have all our insurance through AAA and I wonder if there is an advantage there.
Could happen...

With all the fiasco of the leaky houses in NZ, insurance companies have been very cautious on who they will insure.

Has anyone known someone that has successfully claimed insurance on water damage caused by their leaking house?

The issue arises because though at 1st, the new house may not leak in the short 2 or 3 years, (for which at the time the house can get insurance because it's brand new) then later to discover the house does leaks....

Thanks Jen, I think I'll check out AA and any other companies we already have insurance/mortgage products with as they will probably offer a discount.
(I've just checked out Consumer online, it was a very basic comparison not as good as there power switching info)

Tick Tock - did you have to pay for the electrical survey? Did they take long to send somone round.

I've possibly left it a bit late again, as I'm up for renewal in about 10days and I was hoping to get some quotes to show my existing insurance company in the hope they would simply match it!

Cheers

Ring AA and other companies, they could give you the quotes on the spot.

Hi Ana -

All I know is that NZ AA is a 'foreign affiliate' of AAA meaning you can get some'reciprocal services' in NZ with your AAA card:

http://www.aaaexchange.com/Main/Default.asp?CategoryID=6&SubCategoryID=17

Or vice versa if you're an NZ AA member travelling in the States:

http://www.aa.co.nz/membership/Section?Action=View&Section_id=563&Story_id=3277

I don't know if that'll help at all with insurance - never hurts to ask though!

Yes we did have to pay for it and it was done quickly...they did insure us before it was done....so they are flexible or should I say..can be

We're due to arrive in just over 2 months.
Presumably the instant our container is unpacked its insurance expires and we will need to have a household contents insurance in place. (we'll hpefully of found an unfurnished rental by then).
Could someone please point me at some insurance companies in addion to the AA http://www.aa.co.nz
Thanks
