hello,

A bit anxious about contact with the UK when we arrive...is it easy to get internet access in rented accomadation when you arrive? Do most people use internet cafes? and if so, are there lots around? We are hoping to head to BoP area? I will miss my family the minute I leave in the taxi, so I want to have a clear idea of how quickly I can get in contact when i arrive..

Any tips, info, reassurance greatfully received!!

You can get phone cards from Dairys (like corner shops) to phone family.

We got internet set up in our rented with Telecom very easily, took a few days.

Most hotels, motels had internet access providing you have your own computer. We bought a cheap laptop for the first few months and then sold it on when we had our computer back again :)

If you're flying through Singapore have a look out for the free internet points. Very handy to let people know you've arrived safely.

Jade,

My hubby was running a small business over the internet when we moved here & he managed to get daily access: at the motel we stayed in, at internet cafes, the library and if you have a wi-fi laptop with card installed you can get wireless access at any Starbucks.

Once you move into a property you can sign up to any provider you want for internet services no problems.

With regards to phone we phone a few people via telecom (but you could use SKYPE or get a phone card) - we also get our families to call us using something called Telediscount (only available in UK though & from your user name you might be from elsewhere??) - it costs them 2p per minute which is cheaper than them phoning friends in another part of the UK!!!

Don't worry - NZ is very friendly to keeping in touch with other parts of the world - its so remote from many places that it has to be!!

Try this service...they offer a 3 minute trial to test the service, and it costs 5cants to connect for an hour. The only 2 drawbacks we've found in the 6months we've had it is a bit of a lag time and you have to reconnect after an hour. overall, 5cents an hour to talk with friends and family can't be beat!:nice1
