Well we're expanding our trip to Rotorua by a few extra days. We're planning to spend a few days travelling around the East Cape from Whakatane to Gisbourne.
I've read Diny's post, definitely inspired by all the great pics. But as we're not camping we need some accommodation ideas :) I've had a look at a few websites but everything seems to be quite expensive.
Has anyone travelled around the East Cape and stayed in accommodation there ? Grateful of any suggestions :)

My parents did last summer. And they loved it. I can ask them for recommendations if you'd like - I think they stayed with some friends in a couple of out of the way places, but most of the time used the free book they picked up from the AA shop for suggestions and then negotiated the price on arrival at a motel or b&b. (My Dad is quite enigmatic and seemed to get a discount at lots of places for some reason! I'm sure it wouldn't work if I tried it - I didn't inherit all his charm unfortunately...)

We did it february this year -started from Whakatane 8am and arrived Gisborne at around 4pm. We stopped only to take photos and to eat. There is a great cafe on a corner at Tolaga Bay but I can't remember the name. Can't recommend any places to stay as we didnt stop - all the villages are very small however and I imagine accomodation is limited. It's a great drive when the weather is good - some stunning bays. :)

Wasn't the film Whale Rider shot around the East Cape?

Yep, Whale Rider was filmed in Whangara :)
KerryS that would be great if you could ask where your parents stayed. I'm running short on ideas especially now I've found out most of Gisbourne is booked up due to the ANZAC celebrations :(
