We're ALWAYS looking at other places, it's almost a hobby! :laugh But OH has, for a while, wanted to give up work and do something different so we're looking for a smaller place to run in a more remote area and I quite like the look of Oamaru - more so the inland places between Oamaru and Wanaka.

However, it's proving hard to move ourselves mentally from where we currently live as we love the house and the community, that's a new emotion for me, usually I'd be very disconnected....

Chch is too 'busy' for us after live in villages etc in UK but towns seem nearer in UK than in NZ!! Bit of problems with looking for job....Is I am right that wages is lower if job is out in the country?

They can be, but it's usually due to the nature of the work, more manual work available in rural areas.

Having said that, there are people round here who get $16-18/ hr working in gas stations, hotels/campsites which is more than I got hourly as a network librarian in Chch!

There's a guy in our village who runs Malvern Computers, he moved out here from Chch and basically services local business/domestic pc's h/w and s/w and he seems to be doing just fine by the looks of his car(s)...

BUT.. it depends on the area, some locals don't like giving jobs to "newcomers" if they can employ a local... mainly because you'll be seen as not needing the money (imho / experience).
