I know that this may sound like an incredibly dumb question but what do people generally do in the time between container shipped by sea and flying there yourself? It's one of those logistical questions which is confusing me no end! Sorry if there's an obvious answer but i can't get my head round it.

We sent the container two weeks before we left. In between the container going and us flying we stayed with the in laws. Once we got here we had six weeks without our stuff but bought the basics to keep us going.

pss held ours for about 2 weeks foc before sending it on the journey as we moved out in July & was arriving here in September as you need to be here when it arrives. Our container arrived the day we did which was excellent just had to keep in touch with nz van lines. Once MAF & customs were finished.:) They kept in storage for a cheap rate till we were settled.

We just asked the shippers and were told it would be okay NOT to be there when the stuff arrives, which is what we are planning to do, have the things in storage until we arrive.

Do you have a good source where I could check? Is it customs or the shipping company that require this?

thanks,
Daniela

Container left our house 5 days before we flew. Spent the Saturday and Sunday in the house with the basic's. We managed to sleep in our own beds as they didn't come with us. Once Monday hit us we threw everything that was left into a skip and moved into a local Motel for the next two days. Flew out on the Wednesday.

Our stuff went a couple of weeks before us, we camped out on lilo's with the bare essentials, borrowed Tv and video from family, cleared out the rest of the rubbish, kev did a few odd jobs people had been asking him to do (extra cash!!!!) we were still trying to sell our house and managed to get a buyer a week before we left, so we had paperwork to run around and sort out, and we spent time with friends and family saying goodbye. Last two nights we spent at my parents whilst i blitzed the house.

Try and just chill after the hectic run up to container day, you will need a rest to restore some energy ready for the madness when you get here!!

Good luck!

Shippers come 17 and 18 April, we complete on the house on 19 April and move into a rather grotty, but perfectly adequate married quarter in Plymouth until we fly on 25 June. Quite looking forward to it actually, as we'll be down to the basics.

Hope you find some solution,

Andrea

You have a choice, you either live with the basics in your home country, or over here...

We kind of split, it, hubby had 5 weeks with nothing as he came before me, I packed the house, and had 4 weeks of simple living once I arrived...

You can rent furniture here, buy a few basics from Kmart and Warehouse, and get by, its easier without kids though...
