Hi all
We are heading out to Christchurch at the beginning of June 2007 and have heard that we may have to pay for primary school education.

Does anyone know if this is the case?

Most schools expect a donation which depends on what decile rating they are. Decile rating of 10 means the school will get less funding from the government and expect the parents to make a bigger donation than a decile rating 1 school.

Catholic schools are different again and have set fees for the year. For our eldest we pay $280 a year, a $40 education and trip fee and then uniforms, which I have to say are expensive. Kitting our daughter out for 1 lot of everything has just come to $150 :exit

It will depend on each school and so is worth asking when you visit. If you haven't already have a look at www.ero.govt.nz this is like Ofsted and will also give you the decile ratings of each school.

HTH :)

Hi Julie

As you know we've been looking at schools in Welly (inner suburbs) and it seems that we'll be contributing between $250 - $280 per year per child.

Here we must pay about £50 a year for both children, probably more if I was to really look into it (that £50 excludes cost of uniform, sports stuff, pens and pencils etc).

Oh, and I have to drive approx. 14 miles every day (to, from, to and from school) so the cost of petrol too. Hope to be able to walk to a school in NZ.

We are in chch at a decile 10 school. The donation is just over $100 per child per year. We also have to pay for stationery and school trips etc. I think stationery was about $150 for both kids this year. The cost of school trips is minimal really and they do have some great ones.

Sorry for hijacking someone elses thread !
I have been wondering also on the costs of Education.
My brother will be arriving next month with his 2 children (13) & (8) and will not be putting in for Residency until they have been here for a few months (long story!) Does this mean they will have to pay International fees ? Also once their application is submitted would the cost go down as they have a 'live' application lodged ?
Am getting very confused with this !
Do the school fees that are being talked about on this thread what everyone has to pay - including NewZealanders ?

britchik - the school fees being talked about here are what everyone pays. if your brother wants to send his kids to school here before he has residency/work permit then he will need to pay international school fees on top of those amounts. you pay those fees until your residency/work permit is actually granted - an application makes no difference.

I don't suppose anybody knows the costs off hand for International students ?? A lot, I'm guessing !!? Yikes !

I'm assuming that each school/area is probably different but if anybody could give me any figures it would be much appreciated ;)

I think it was about $11,000 per year last year at the primary school my children will attend. I checked this because the headmistress wanted to know what the status of the kids was when we first enquired. This is in Auckland.

Hi International fees are 10,000NZD per year and are paid on a term basis but if you have a work permit and are appling for residences such as work to residency then you dont pay this only the donation

International fees are 10,000NZD per yearactually they really do vary quite a lot by school - as do the donations.

We have 2 children in a decile 10 primary school in Christchurch. Our "donations" are $55 per term, 4 terms = $220 for them both. Stationery was about $50 at the start of the year - that should see them through apart from a few more exercise books and glue sticks!

Not so much voluntary, they will chase you for the donations!!

I take it that fees are NOT voluntary. What happens if you don't pay them? Do your kids get kicked out of school? I am used to buying school uniform & pens etc.... Also paying for school trips but education in the UK is free and I thought this was the same in NZ.

There was a case on the news a few months back of kids being sent home from school as their "donations" hadn't been paid. I think this is pretty extreme though to say the least. We asked recently whether the kindy donation we paid was optional and were told no. I think the phrase donation is more so for tax claiming purposes.

Under the current law in NZ compulsory education is free, as (officially) the government fully fund each school for the cost to deliver core education.

Government schools cannot charge students for their education, though they can charge for non core activities like school trips or above average equipment or other non core learning or student support.
