We have had our medicals today and it seemed to go ok apart from Graham may have to see a cardiologist due to him having a heart bypass and carotid artery op.
We haven't actually sent our application in as yet and we go to NZ next week and will be away for 8 weeks. Can we apply while we are over there and will it cost more or will there still be time when we return to apply when we come back.
Also can we apply before we go and get it in the system or do we have to have our son's sponsorship etc to send with it. Can we send that at a later date? I am justwondering where the medicals will go to when we ahven't actually applied yet.......feeling pretty thick over it all

The medicals are sent to you, and you then forward them with your application.
Isn't cardiac bypass surgery on the list of exceptions though? I thought it was, and was using it as one of the reasons I'm not even suggesting sponsoring my parents over.

Thanks for that, and I realised it after I had sent the message, (dummy that I am) I wasn't aware of Heart bypass being an exception. My DH has had the bypass and is now better than he has ever been. The doctor didn't say anything to us about it which I am sure he would have. Are you saying that he won't be accepted because of it? Where would we find a list of exceptions?

hi jan

the medicals are done to enable NZIS to determine if you would impose significant costs or demands on NZ's health system. normally each case is decided individually. however there are a list of conditions for which it is automatically decided that they will impose significant costs or demands. the list is in Appendix 10 of the operations manual

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/nzis/operations_manual/7641.htm

i'm afraid i dont know enough about medical stuff to know if your OH would be on the list or not.

I do know that any family sponsorship form has to be sent in at the same time as your application form - I doubt it would be an option to submit your son's form later than yours.

And it's worth being aware that medicals are only valid for three months, so once you get back from NZ you'll need to send everything in quite quickly as you'll only have about three weeks left. I don't think you can have your application processed in NZ unless you're resident there on a work permit ... but that could be wrong!

It's worth you getting a report from your doctor and the cardiac specialist on the bypass and sending that with the application.

We sent through a report on my OH's medical condition and they came back and asked for a more indepth report which is going to delay our application by about a month.

And as said above, the medicals are posted back to you - this could take a couple of weeks so may well arrive when you're not there.

So does that mean that even if we apply immediately we come back and the medicals aren't passed that it will be delayed? Will that mean we could be over the three month time or will they take that in account?

Once they mark the application as received then as long as your medicals are in date by then you are ok.

OH's medical was at the end of Dec, so techincally now it's out of date, but apart from the extra information they've asked for (which we have to get to them by April 20) it's still being processed as normal.

But if I was you I'd want to send in my application with a good two weeks to spare - just in case of postal delays etc. Even better, I'd go down to London and hand it in person so that you get a dated receipt like we did.

I know this is a bit late but we did put our application in when we were in NZ and took it personally to Hamilton. We got a receipt of everything with a large book and all our certificates etc back with a week and a couple of weeks later after we had left for home another letter went to my sons address. He emailed it through and they wanted extra information from cardiologist and vascular surgeon. We got those done pretty quickly (and privately) and they have got them in Hamilton 3 weeks ago. We are now waiting patiently (or impatiently) to hear from them whether we have been transferred to London or whether they are dealing with us from there, I don't know...but the reports from the cardiologist and surgeon were very good and in his favour

I have been told that they are processing the applications and medicals much quicker now. Is that right? We applied on May 8th and my DH is looking for the mail man every day LOL He is so impatient......Jan
