My husband is a chocoholic and really loves Cadburys chocolate. Is Cadburys chocolate available in NZ? If so this might be the leverage I need for him to finally say yes to the move.:laugh

Yes we have a factory here on the South Island, however, NZ & Aussie Cadbury's is different from UK Cadbury's - it doesn't contain vegetable fat, which makes the flavour different (personally I prefer it a lot better here but some people don't). Evidently, from speaking with my Aussie bro-in-law previously, they have to have a different recipe at least for Aussie (don't know if its the same for NZ) so that the choccie doesn't melt on the shelves since its so hot over there most of the time.

Something you can tempt hubby with is the range of different flavours of Cadbury's that you can't get in Europe - Their big blocks of choccie are on sale at most supermarkets most weeks for about $2.99. They have Rocky Road flavour (yum - my fave!!), Black Forest, Turkish Delight flavour, Cashew nut flavour, Mint Chips, there's a 3 layer one can't remember the name but its got white, milk & dark choccie in it, Old Gold (dark choccie), Lemon Cheesecake flavour, Chocolate Fudge Cake flavour, Banoffee Pie flavour, Caramel Whip, Caramello (like Cadbury's Caramel), Coconut Rough, Crunchie, Dream, Dairy Milk Mousse, Peppermint, Roast Almond, oh and then there's Moro bars - like Mars bars but I think nicer...

(Yes I am a chocoholic!!) so if that's not enough to tempt him over here I don't know what will!! :)

I am a big fan of Whittikers (sp) chocolate, found in grocery stores in NZ, but this is coming from an American, and I know UK/UK/NZ have VERY different chocolate!

I wonder if it different flavour like the USA "Cadburys"..?
As i got to USA once thinking "yumm cadburys dairy milk on holiday!" Took one bite and was nearly sick, as it was nothing like UK genuine Cadburys.

Hey ho, not going to NZ for Choccy, but hell it would help!

I was very very sad when I first tasted NZ Cadburys chocolate - I thought it tasted absolutely disgusting - my OH used to think the same of UK Cadburys but now copes quite well to devour the stuff! Just what you're used to I suppose but I'm certain my chocolate consumption will reduce drastically when we move - ah well, good for the waistline i guess!

I brought a stash of cadburys from the uk, and friends brought me another two huge 1KG bars when they came in Feb. I'm sorry to say I thinkthe cadburys here is YUCK!! It tastes like cheap Advent calender chocolate, that Kinnerton stuff - truely horrible, but the kids can't taste the difference.

But there is other chocolate around which is nice, and like everything else I'm sure over time i will get used to the taste - but not till I've eaten my stash anyway! :laugh

I thought the NZ Cadburys was yuck also. But I soon got use to it, in a way the chocolate itself isn't so bad its more the shock of eating it out of cadburys wrapper if you see what I mean?

Funnily enough on my trip back to the UK I ate a bar of UK Cadburys without thinking and thought 'yuck what's this?!' :laugh After a lifetime of loving it I've come to the conclusion I'm pretty fickle.

My fave is still galaxy though and they don't have any of that here, so I always get somone to bring some over. In fact I've probably had more galaxy here than I did in the UK because people keep sending me it! :)

Cheers

I was a big Godiva truffle fan in the states.. but have become a slave to the much cheaper and less attractive (but extemely yummy) Picnic Bar in NZ. "Deliciously ugly!" as the ad says!! Well, at least I'll have more cash left over.

Have to say I HATED the Cadbury Chocolate over here when I first came out, but now I prefer it. I have a friend In UK who I send over the different range of Cadburys we get here and she also prefers it to English Cadburys !

Still, I think it's just a case of what you get used to .....

Mmmmm Galaxy ! Yum ! Forgot all about that !! Think friend is going to have to start trading with me !!

Definately agree on the biscuits front there Stu !!
N Z biscuits all taste the same, Mc Vities need to import decent Digestives over here !
Only biscuits I have found I like are in the Bakery dept of Countdown called Choko crunch........now, they are nice !!!

(and why oh why can you not buy Jam Doughnuts over here !!! )

Ooh - If you live in Welly the most fantastic choccie company called Schock chocolates (their factory is in Greytown, Waiarapa) - they do the best flavours ever - chilli lime is my fave but sea salt and pepper flavours are worth trying if just out of curiosity!

No I don't think anyone has set up a choccie appreciation society - but then again who wants to share their choccie?? :) Certainly not me!! ;) hee hee!!

I took the Cadburys tour in Dunedin but wasn't that impressed with their products.

My favorite when I'm in New Zealand is Whitakers Dark Orange.

They've also got a cafe at the bottom of Tory Street in Wellington (one block back from Te Papa) - I had a slice of basil chocolate from one of the girls in work a while ago - a bit strange but chocolate all the same! :)

Have to admit that I'm in the 'can't tell the difference' club.

However, the things I do miss are McVitties Chocolate Hob Nobs and a good digestive biscuit.

Well obviously with such important information I had to act immediately. I went out a bought a Nestle Mud Truffle Bar (is that the one you meant?), its got doble blended milk chocolate in it and is in a red wrapper.

I tried a piece and you're right it does taste a bit like galaxy. But I had to be sure so I finshed the rest of the bar off in the name of research :D

Galaxy still has the edge, (maybe its a texture thing), but it is a pretty good substitue - thanks jub jub. :nice1

That's the Nestle Heaven wrapper. It's nice and the bonbons are along the lines of Lindt with the soft inside... but not as nice as Lindt.

I felt so sorry for UK people when I came over here and saw what a small variety of Cadbury's they had!

My favourite is Almond Gold from Whittakers. I'll be stocked up as soon as I get back home!

CHOCOLATE PRICES RISING! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!

Broadcast news reported an hour ago that USA and its allies have decalred Chocolate factories an essential service and Canada is contributing its fleet of canoes and two cessnas in war against African nations hell bent on creating havoc in world markets by destroying the choco crops which has led to a steep rise in prices in the recent weeks.

You can get McVities Digestives and Hobnobs in Foodtown and New World - at least in Auckland you can!

I send my parents over kilos of Whittakers chocolate (orange and ginger varieties usually) and they send me Double Deckers, Monster Munch and solid jelly blocks in return.

Some dairies sell US chocolates - I can get Reeses Pieces and Peanut Butter Cups in my local one.

I like the 70% stuff if I'm going to eat chocolate, so I was never a Cadbury's or Galaxy fan.

In Auckland there is a fab little chocolate place in Parnell. http://www.chocolateboutique.co.nz/index.html
Their hot chocolates are delicious, especially the chilli denso - so solid you can almost make the spoon stand up!

Unfortunately, we haven't got a Foodtown here and I've scanned the shelves in New World and can't find them.

I'll have a word next time I go into New World and see if they will order me some.

Maybe next time you shop at New World, you could confirm for me that they sell both types of biccies and then I don't make a complete idiot of myself in our local branch.........not hard for me...... :laugh

Well, after reading this thread i just had to go out and get some of the Cadburys chocolates.

We landed here last Wednesday and are both chocaholics. I was so disappointed with the crunchies out her, they were my down fall in uk.

But, i must admit, afte tasting the Rocky Road Cadburys block, I am sold!!! Definetly will buy again!!! Bought my hubby the caramello, but he isnt too impressed.

Also tried some of those Moro bars and they arent too bad. Going off on a tangent slightly, i bough some of the squares of coconut ice in Pac and Save and would def buy again.

I think I might be quite a bad chocoholic, i was given quite a collection of chocolate this week to "get better soon" amazing what a little operation and big bandages can get! lol.

But I love the creamy taste of Galaxy seems like I'm going to have to get it posted over to me when I move to NZ though i think I'll get use to it, as long as its not like American chocolate (which i swear is not chocolate) then i should be fine.

Wonder if u can get NZ chocolate in the Uk.....

There is a new zealand shop in the alleyway behind the NZIS bulding in London too. I availed myself of a couple of pinkie bars and a peanut slab, just to convince myself that yes I did want those blue stickers!

I was disappointed with the Cadburys when I first tried it over here. Then Easter came along and Mr Lass got given an egg with a huge 400g bar from his boss at work which I ate in what I can only describe as a "chocolate frenzy" one afternoon while he was out. Got in serious trouble for that! I am now an NZ Cadbury convert. Haven't tried the rocky road one yet though. might be my mission for today!

The big difference is the cocoa content, NZ chocolate is closer to European chocolate on that score. So if you like Belgian, German or Swiss chocolate you will like NZ chocolate. But if you are content with the lower cocoa content of UK chocolate (or Vegelate as the EU wanted to rename it as the cocoa level was too low to qualify as true chocolate in Europe) you will probably find the taste a challenge

I like chocolate. Pretty much all chocolate. Chocolate in NZ does taste different to chocolate in the UK, but not really better or worse, although perhaps slightly less sickly (prefer darker chocolate as less "milky-milky").

That makes sense, because even after 10 years in the UK I still prefer Swiss choclate to British and always try to have some form of Lindt in the house for "emergencies". :)

Are you sure about that? I remember reading an interview with a Cadburys rep in Dunedin and he said that, compared to the UK version, the NZ Cadburys contained significantly more fat, more sugar and less cocoa solids - resulting in that (to my taste) overly sweet, sticky and not-very-chocolate flavour that reminds me of cooking chocolate. But then my preferred choc treat is Lindt 75% cocoa - hard core!! I think most good European chocolate producers would freak if you told them their products were remotely like NZ cadburys! But I could be wrong.

The sweet tastes of the NZ consumer spills over into lots of things - salad dressings, ham and bacon, mayo and tom sauce - I find all these too sweet. Even a lot of the biscuits and crumbles etc lack a salty, savoury edge to offset the sweetness.

Between Belgian,German and Swiss chocolate is a big different.
I still love the Swiss made chololate which is more creamy and smooth. yamm.
