Hi has anyone had problems getting insurance. Have only rung Columbus so far, but as we're migrating and only have a one way ticket, they will only insure us up to the point we pass NZ immigration. We'll obviously get health, life insurance etc set up when we arrive but need something that will tide us over. Just wondered what others had done?:?
Cheers

We use Sovereign Major Care just in case but you are covered on ACC and via local GP's etc for basic medical care. Much depends on individual circumstances but there are plenty of plans to choose from and some employers provide private medical as part of their package so check this out first. It cn often be extended to cover your immediate family!

Hi there,
Just to follow up on this one, ACC seems to cover medical matters which is good news, but we're interested in insuring our belongings too. Have tried Columbus, Direct Line et al who seem not to be able to offer cover for people travelling to NZ who are intending to stay there. Even annual travel insurance doesn't let you stay abroad for more than 60 days.
Is it best to take out a standard single trip policy that will basically cover us for about a month, then get our stuff insured properly once we are in NZ? We could "pretend" that we are coming back to the UK after that month, but wouldn't that invalidate the policy?
Or is there an expat insurance specialist out there anyone can recommend, that knows how to work round these problems effectively?
