Not that I have decided about going back yet, but one thought has sprung to mind.
Timing could be quite important for a higher rate tax payer leaving (or arriving) in the country.
e.g. returning to the UK in September, could result in a tax refund from New Zealand and a tax saving on return to the UK. Both tax savings could potentialy fund the costs of going back.

I suppose it could work both ways, e.g. people coming to New Zealand.
