Does anyone know?
I have a fly collection of around 60 flies, but have recently been told I can only take them if they not made from real feathers.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I cant comment on flies, but I bought over lots of fishing gear, half expecting to have a major with MAF, and they didnt even cast a glance at it (excuse the pun).
I also have a friend here in NZ who makes flies for a living, and he has no problems exporting/importing. I have heard that they dont like any animal stuffs, including feathers, so the worste they could do is confiscate them or chare you for fumigation.

How severe is the penalty?
Individuals not declaring quarantine goods can be fined up to $100, 000 and/or face up to 5 years in jail.
i'm not saying its likely for a few feathers but maf take a pretty dim view of people who don't declare stuff like that and you may find yourself in a bit of trouble

Simple thing either leave the ones with feathers in uk or take them with you and declare them at customs.
Unless most of you flies are feathered I would probably be inclined to go for the former, maybe put them on e bay

Hi we are avide Fly Fishing people....I think sometimes thats the only reason we moved here!
We had no trouble bringing in our rods, however all flies made with animal product ..esp birds...was a big no no. Also they wanted to know about wanders and any iteams that would have been in contact with the fish...ie nets, scales, priests( wood to kill the fish). Once they see you have fishing equpment they have a good noisy at it and ask questions.
With all the hype about Dyidimo here they are on the ball
