Been doing a bit of temping since i left Fonterra and the Tankers at our local branch of Furniture Court. Have got really pally with the owner over the last 17 months and last week he asked me if i would like some work for a few weeks doing a few deliveries. Answer was yes as he had given us good discount for cash when we arrived...scratching back syndrome. Well tonight he took all his staff and spouses out for a drink or two. Staff numbers are no more than 6, so with him and the co owner it made 8 staff, 16 with OH's. He ended up with a bill for meals and booze of around 1k  I have been told he does this maybe once every two months. Think i'll try and stick around for the next night out.
Oh as an added bonus i am suppose to get 50% discount on stock:raebanana

Kim, some employers are great, family days, weekends etc all on the company, and thats the experience we have had.
Others, well, from what I hear, would not spit on you if you were on fire.... I have recently heard of two blatent sex discrimination cases....
So in answer to your question, its just your luck!, and I would make the most of it if I were you!
Cardy, good luck with your new job!

I was gobsmacked that the owner of the garage I worked at arranged a big Xmas bash at a local winery - I mean, we're all part time till-girls!! Picked up in bus, with champagne flowing onboard, door to door driven around all night and in to Chch - dinner and drinks all free, 55km each way! Marvellous!
Woz's co. has a family bbq each year and 2 eve dinners inc. spouses.

Wow, sounds like the employers in NZ do appreciate their employees. :cheers
That is a welcome change from things here in North America (for most part).

I have had really lovely experiences too.. although a different scale given that we are a very small not for profit. I previously was used to supplying most of my own office supplies and such (think education/ health sector in america...), so I realize I am easily impressed. But my bosses are always making sure that we are okay, when we arrived they prepare a lovely basket of food to get us by for a few days, lend us their car when we want to buy furniture, include my OH in all work lunches out etc. They were away on leave a while ago and heard that a co-worker was sick. They called to say that I should take the work car and drop off some comfort foods, if the person was up for it.... and it wasnt that they just wanted to make sure that she was really sick.
Plus having reasonable leave policies is really lovely after the US. People here are shocked when I explain the status quo in the states with minimal leave after you work for a year, health insurance being tied to your full time work status, etc. While salaries arent as good, I:ll take this any day.

Hi There my new boss took us kayaking during work time yesterday at lake karapiro. Ok it was supposed to be a team building excercise but boy it was fun. Then snacks and drinks at the cafe there, afterwards we collected our partners from home and went to a restaurant(greek/turkish ) in Hamilton for an evening meal and drinks which was excellent.
However i have seen the other side with other employers here. As a senior manager ive always reaped the benefits no problem but i,ve seen owners who werent so good to the staff. On occasion i have asked about evenings out ,social events and bonuses for them and had replies like Why ? they get paid to do the job already. !!! obviously i didnt stay there long. I like to look after my people.
My current employer is offering discounted mortgages ,cheaper health insurance and free flu jabs this week.
Cheers Cardy:nice1

We've found that both of our employers have been wonderful. In the first week after moving here we paid $10- each as part of hubby's co's social club & went on the Interislander & an organised winery trip with a coach-load of his colleagues, we've been to huge Xmas parties, kiddies Xmas parties, meals & theatre nights, and we went to the premiere of Star Wars movie at the Embassy, have even had cooking classes!
The other night hubby came back with a hamper full of lovely food goodies - because they had been at the annual announcement for the financial results of his company - everyone got a hamper!! He also did his back in just before we got married & his boss immediately sent him a hamper of goodies & came round to see if there was anything he could do & to genuinely see how he was (not when he would be back at work!)
He's been out on a couple of day fishing charters, they go regularly to the rugger and they have a company day out for the staff where last year they were playing human fussball & doing go-karting!
When our daughter arrived I got a huge bouquet of flowers - we got $200 of Kirks vouchers when we got married!!
Oh and we get trade discount for anything to do with building/decorating at most shops in Welly region!
I have worked for NGO & although not huge financial gestures (wouldn't expect that from a charity anyway!) my bosses genuinely care about their staff & were absolutely wonderful whilst I was having some medical difficulties & quite a few of them travelled to Northland for the wedding & we got a lovely bouquet of baby clothes when our daughter arrived with us!
Quite amazing - in the UK my company thought having an annual pizza around the photocopier during lunch-time was a Xmas party - so long as it didn't eat into precious work time or give us the wrong idea that we might enjoy ourselves a bit much!
